Abu Simbel - Architectural masterpiece of ancient Egypt

#100waysoftravel #roadtrip Located close to the southern border of Egypt, 280 km from the city of Aswan, Abu Simbel was carved directly on the rough sandstone blocks, then completed by a team of highly skilled sculptors according to the construction standards of the time. Started in the 13th century BC, it took twenty years for this great work to be completed. A complex of two temples carved directly into the mountain rock is where the Pharaoh and his beloved wife - Queen Nefertari expressed their respect to the supreme gods such as the Sun God Amon-Re, the King's patron god Re-Horakhte or the Goddess of motherhood Hathor. Seen from afar, the Great Temple displays its majestic beauty against the deep blue background of the sky with four giant statues up to 20 meters high guarding the entire facade with the majestic and beautiful sitting posture of the glorious Pharaoh. Unfortunately, the upper part of the second statue was destroyed after an earthquake, the fragments are lying on the ground, right at the entrance. The large temple has a height of 30 meters, a width of 35 meters, the entrance connects three halls with a depth of about 56 meters, making a strong impression with eight statues of the king, shaped and carved delicately.
