Missing the Crater, but Meeting Kumamon and Usopp at Aso Station

I caught the Kyushu Odan Express from Kumamoto early this morning, arriving in Aso brimming with anticipation. Unfortunately, the moment I stepped out of the station, I was told the volcanic crater was closed for the day. Feeling a bit let down, I had to settle for a brief stop around Aso Station instead. Although my plans were derailed, the station itself is packed with character. The black wooden structure exudes a beautifully grounded, retro Showa-era charm. Right by the main entrance, a chubby "Kumamon Daruma" sits on a bench, playfully winking at visitors—an absolute must for a photo op. The plaza out front also features an impressive bronze statue of Usopp from *One Piece*, adding a burst of lively anime energy to the area. Fortunately, there was a charming local farmers' market right next to the station plaza. While I didn't get to see the crater, savoring handmade treats from local farmers and shopping for fresh produce turned out to be a relaxing, delightfully authentic surprise in this beautiful volcanic town.
