BATHing in the abundance of history

This city is situated on the banks of the beautiful River Avon with its lovely step-like waterfalls and bridge . The architecture here is quite spectacular with its rows of stately Georgian houses built with the local honey coloured Bath stone. These houses were built for people who came to bathe in the waters of the spa. This water is said to contain healing powers ! The baths remained in a dormant state until about one hundred years ago when a gentleman reported that warm water was seeping into his basement. This was when the ancient Roman baths and hotsprings were discovered. They had fallen into disuse and distrepair and laid under the ground for over a thousand years. The Romans built the baths in about ad 43 and also built a temple there. By the time they were rediscovered, many beautiful buildings had been built over them but much of the ancient architecture and many artifacts were discovered and continue to be unearthed to this day. There is now a modern spa there also which I found to be most refreshing and enjoyable and maybe I did feel it's healing powers ! I would definately recommend any one to come and visit this delightful city !
