Beijing Nanluoguxiang | Experience Hutong Culture

Nanluoguxiang (Nanluogu Lane) is a historically famous cultural alley, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Beijing, located in the Jiaodaokou area on the east side of Beijing's central axis. Nanluoguxiang starts from the east of the Drum Tower in the north and extends to Ping'an Avenue in the south, with a total length of 786 meters and a width of 8 meters. It was built during the same period as the Yuan Dynasty capital and is the only completely preserved traditional residential area of the Yuan Dynasty hutong courtyard texture in China, with the largest scale, highest grade, and richest resources. Nanluoguxiang runs from north to south, with 16 neatly arranged hutongs on both the east and west sides, forming a fishbone pattern, also known as Centipede Street. Nanluoguxiang was formed during the construction of the Yuan Dynasty capital. During the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, it was the station of the Bordered Yellow Banner; from the late Guangxu period to the Xuantong period, it belonged to the Inner Left Third District; during the Republic of China, it was part of the Inner Fifth District. Nanluoguxiang was once a gathering place for officials, nobles, and cultural celebrities, not only preserving a number of long-standing hutongs and gray-tiled Siheyuan courtyards but also containing rich cultural and historical traces due to the existence of these celebrities' former residences. In 1990, Nanluoguxiang was listed as the first batch of historical and cultural conservation areas in Beijing. In 2009, it was recommended by Time Magazine as one of the 25 must-visit cultural experience destinations in Asia and was rated as a 3A tourist attraction by the National Tourism Administration. In November 2010, it won the Global Gold Award for municipal projects at the 14th United Nations 'LIVCOM International Awards for Liveable Communities' held in Chicago, USA. In early 2016, based on the principle of protecting the ancient capital's appearance, Nanluoguxiang voluntarily applied to cancel its 3A tourist attraction status and suspended the reception of tourist groups. On December 20, 2016, the Nanluoguxiang Historical and Cultural Street Area Appearance Conservation Guidelines were officially released and implemented. 🚇 Subway: Exit E of Nanluoguxiang Station on Subway Lines 6 and 8 🚗 Bus: Take bus routes 118, 13, 3, 4, Night 2, Night 3, or Sightseeing Line 3 to Nanluoguxiang Station, within walking distance
