The Forbidden City - you can’t skip it

The Forbidden City in Beijing is one of those places that you can’t help but visit. Walking through its massive gates, you’re surrounded by towering red walls and golden rooftops, and it’s hard to imagine this was once the center of imperial China for almost 500 years. With nearly 1,000 buildings spread across 180 acres, it’s huge—you could spend half a day here and still not see it all. If you’re planning a visit, try to go in spring or autumn. Beijing summers are scorching, and the stone courtyards reflect all that heat, plus there are no trees to provide shadow in the courtyard. April, May, September, and October offer cooler weather and a more comfortable experience. Most people stick to the main attractions, like the Hall of Supreme Harmony, but if you explore a bit further, you’ll find some quieter spots. The Palace of Tranquil Longevity in the northeastern corner is one of them. It was meant as a retirement home for Emperor Qianlong, though he never moved in. The gardens there are peaceful, with far fewer people. Another hidden gem is the Treasure Gallery, where you can check out incredible jade carvings and other imperial treasures. It’s a glimpse into the extravagance of the emperors’ lives. When you’re done exploring, head over to Jingshan Park, just outside the Forbidden City. If you climb to the top of the hill, you’ll be rewarded with a stunning panoramic view of the entire palace complex, especially beautiful at sunset.
