#ancient TOWN Jiufen Ancient Town, nestled in the mountains of Ruifang District in New Taipei City, Taiwan, is a captivating destination renowned for its rich history, cultural significance, and scenic beauty.  ⸻ 🏯 Historical Background Originally a secluded village during the Qing Dynasty, Jiufen was home to nine families. The name “Jiufen” translates to “nine portions,” reflecting the practice of requesting nine portions of supplies for the families. The discovery of gold in 1893 transformed Jiufen into a bustling mining town, reaching its peak during the Japanese colonial era. However, after World War II, the gold industry declined, and the mines were closed in 1971, leading to a period of obscurity for the town.   Jiufen experienced a resurgence in 1989 when it served as the filming location for Hou Hsiao-hsien’s acclaimed movie A City of Sadness, which brought attention to the town’s nostalgic charm and historical architecture.  ⸻ 🌟 Cultural Significance Jiufen’s unique ambiance, characterized by its narrow alleyways, red lanterns, and traditional teahouses, is often associated with the aesthetic of Studio Ghibli’s animated film Spirited Away.
