The Yungang Grottoes are a national 5A tourist attraction located in the Yungang District of Datong City, Shanxi Province, within the Yungang Scenic Area. They are one of the four major grottoes in China and a World Cultural Heritage site. The statues and sculptures are extremely exquisite and unparalleled, with a variety of forms, kind and amiable expressions, and a strong three-dimensional effect, as they are mostly high-relief sculptures that stand out from the wall. They combine religion, art, and architecture, inspiring awe and admiration for the spirit of craftsmanship and the treasures of the Chinese nation. The Yungang Grottoes perfectly integrate cultural landscapes with natural scenery. Carved during the middle and late periods of the Northern Wei Dynasty, the ancient historical architecture features elements of Indian and Central Asian art, as well as Greek and Roman architectural forms, decorative patterns, and characteristics of figures; they are full of mystery and are stunningly magnificent.
