Hogback is a magical getaway destination within the mountains of the Amatola. The mountain is surrounded by lush forest and waterfalls that can be visited along the many amazing hiking trails criss-crossing about the hills and valleys. The legend is that Tolkien might have been inspired by these mountains during his childhood stay in South Africa. It's not difficult to believe. As you meander up the winding road that leads to the top of the mountain, you will feel the temperature and air change, as if coming through the mist into a magical village. As you enter the village at the top, cottages, inns and restaurants welcome you on the side of the main road. Some are hidden in the thick foliage so keep your eyes peeled and don't rush. There aren't any big shops or public conveniences. It's a truly rural settlement. It is a place to escape and be in nature. Some neat spots to stay are: Away with the Fairies - a quiet spot for camping or backpacking. It's a quaint building surrounded by quiet grassy spots, a spectacular lookout over the valley, and a laidback pub to quench your thirst. Barbecues are allowed. The Edge - fancy cottages right at the edge of the mountain peak will allow you to wake up to unbelievably beautiful views of the valley below The Hogsback Inn - the oldest inn in the village.
