Hong Kong Heritage Museum exhibits over 100 sets of ancient Chinese female artifacts from Nanjing Museum

The Hong Kong Heritage Museum will hold the "Hong Kong Jockey Club Presents Series: Searching for Her in the Crowd - Exhibition of Ancient Chinese Women's Cultural Relics from the Nanjing Museum" from November 30th, exhibiting ancient Chinese women's cultural relics from the Nanjing Museum, including daily necessities, accessories, embroidery and calligraphy and painting masterpieces by ancient talented women, as well as paintings of ladies by famous artists of all dynasties. Through the exhibition, visitors can gain a deeper understanding of the fashion, wisdom and life of ancient women. The opening ceremony of the exhibition was held on November 29th. In his speech at the opening ceremony, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Kevin Yeung said that this exhibition displays a total of 118 collections from the Nanjing Museum, of which 21 sets of national first-class cultural relics are being exhibited in Hong Kong for the first time, which is very rare. They show the various forms of ancient Chinese women. The exhibits cover a wide range of time and life. Visitors can see the rich and diverse Chinese female culture and thus understand the appearance and development of the country's society. This exhibition displays national treasures with new thinking, and also compares the image of women in ancient and modern society, starts a dialogue, and leads the audience to think. It is believed that it will enable the public to better understand Chinese culture. Other guests attending the ceremony included Wang Qizhi, Deputy Director of Nanjing Museum, Dr. Leung Cheuk-wai, Executive Director of Charities and Community of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, May Tam, Deputy Director (Culture) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, and Lo Shiu-li, Chief Curator of the Hong Kong Heritage Museum. The exhibition consists of four parts. The first part revolves around the fashion trends of women’s hairstyles, makeup and clothing throughout the ages. The second part explores the lives of women from different classes through the daily necessities and accessories of ancient women. The third part brings together calligraphy, painting, embroidery and stationery by talented women of all ages, showcasing the outstanding talents of ancient women. The fourth part allows the audience to glimpse the tragic and happy lives of legendary women through the images of women portrayed by artists. Key exhibits include a national first-class cultural relic, a 13-meter-long scroll painting from the Qing Dynasty titled "Ancient Ladies Enjoying Pleasure". This silk handscroll leads visitors through more than 20 activity scenes including bamboo forests, gardens, corridors, and pavilions, showing the rich and colorful leisure activities of ancient women, just like a large atlas of ancient entertainment. Other not-to-be-missed exhibits include the hanging scroll "Li Duanduan's Demise" by Tang Yin, one of the four great painters of the Ming Dynasty, depicting the anecdotes of the Tang Dynasty poet Cui Ya and the famous prostitute Li Duanduan; "Yao Palace Autumn Fan" by Ren Xiong, a famous painter of the late Qing Dynasty Shanghai School, which fully displays the beauty of ancient women; the hanging scroll "Flowers and Butterflies" by Ma Quan, a boudoir painter of the Qing Dynasty; and the jewel-studded Jin Dynasty crown, a headdress worn by women of the Qing Dynasty to attend grand occasions; and the classic "Portrait of American Actress Beck" by Shen Shou, a master of embroidery in the late Qing Dynasty who was known as the "Needle God". In response to this exhibition, the Hong Kong Heritage Museum has specially produced the "Women Searching for Their Hong Kong Stories" segment, allowing the audience to discover the image of contemporary Hong Kong women through the experiences of four independent Hong Kong women, including the famous image counselor Lau Tin-lan, world-renowned cyclist Lee Wai-she, radio host Wong Ching-yee (Ah Zheng) and trainee fire captain Yao Pui-yin, as well as the museum's popular culture collections. "The Hong Kong Jockey Club Presents Series: Searching for Her - Exhibition of Ancient Chinese Women's Cultural Relics from the Nanjing Museum" is one of the celebrations for the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
