Malaysia's First Zoo - Johor Zoo

Located just a 10-minute drive from downtown Johor Bahru, Johor Zoo is one of the oldest zoos in Malaysia. It was originally established in 1919 as a private zoo by Sultan Ibrahim of Johor, and later became Malaysia's first public zoo when the government took over in 1962. The zoo is relatively small, covering an area of about 12 hectares. Despite its modest size, it houses over 100 species of animals, including iconic mammals like lions, tigers, and elephants, as well as monkeys, deer, flamingos, peacocks, and even crocodiles. While it doesn't feature a modern safari-style layout, visitors can enjoy close-up views of the animals. One of the most surprising aspects of Johor Zoo is its incredibly affordable entrance fee. Adults pay just 2 ringgit, and children only 1 ringgit, making it one of the cheapest zoos in Malaysia. This affordability attracts many local families, and it's common to see children happily feeding deer and enjoying their time. (Note: Foreign visitors may have higher entrance fees.) For tourists, Johor Zoo is a great spot for a half-day visit. While it may not meet high expectations, its over 100-year history as a local zoo makes it a meaningful destination. It offers a glimpse into a simpler, more traditional side of Malaysia, distinct from the flashy shopping malls and modern buildings. A major highlight is the active and lively behavior of the animals.
