Egypt | Cairo | The Lost Ancient Civilization Fed by Heaven Itself

We spent 10 days in Egypt, with two days dedicated to Cairo. You can use Uber throughout Cairo, but it’s also recommended to download InDrive. Countless drivers will try to offer you a private car service, but unless you really want to avoid hassle, it’s unnecessary! If you plan to explore on your own without a guide, it’s advisable to at least read some history about ancient Egypt beforehand to understand better. There are also some great history vloggers on Bilibili explaining Egyptian history well. I even made a PowerPoint chart of the gods’ relationships—feel free to leave a comment if interested! 1️⃣ Giza Pyramids (Photos 1-4) About half a day, recommended to visit in the morning. The ticket costs 700 EGP, including shuttle buses inside to different spots. Entering the Great Pyramid of Khufu costs an additional 1500 EGP, and you need to transfer from the green line to the yellow line to reach the entrance. Whether it’s worth going inside Khufu is subjective—there’s really nothing inside, but once inside, you’ll feel it’s not something built by ancient people. We didn’t ride horses or camels as it felt like a rip-off, but you can reach the 9th tower viewpoint. 2️⃣ Grand Egyptian Museum (Photos 5-6) Ticket price is 1200 EGP, near the pyramids. When we visited, it was in trial operation; now it’s officially open. Sisters who have been there, can you confirm if you can now cross the bridge directly from the pyramids? The Grand Egyptian Museum has very high-quality exhibits with great depth, and the souvenir shop is also worth browsing. Tutankhamun’s artifacts have been moved here from the old museum, making it even more worthwhile. 3️⃣ Egyptian Museum (Photos 7-11) Ticket price 550 EGP. We had a chance encounter! The staff were very nice and professional. The old museum still has many interesting exhibits including the scribe, the old village chief, the statue of Khufu, and more. 4️⃣ Museum of Egyptian Civilization (Photo 12) Ticket price 550 EGP. You can store your luggage here for free! The highlight of this museum is the mummies of various pharaohs and queens. Photography is not allowed inside the mummy hall, so there’s only one photo at the entrance. I have to say, Seti I and Ramses II look quite handsome! 5️⃣ Saladin Citadel and Mosque (Photos 13-15) Ticket price 550 EGP. This castle was built during the Islamic period. The mosque’s large clock tower was a gift from France in 1845, and Egypt gave an obelisk in exchange. You can wear shoe covers inside the mosque, no need to take off your shoes. 6️⃣ Khan El Khalili Bazaar Go in the evening; by 8 or 9 PM, traffic becomes chaotic and unbearable. InDrive drivers will aggressively ask for extra fees, so it’s better to walk a bit farther before hailing a ride. Photo 16 shows a scene like the Thousand and One Nights, just like what Huashao visited. The coffee shop next to it has a great view. 🛍️ Shopping The best area to shop is Zamalek. Recommended stores are Anut and Fair Trade, both offering great value! 🍲 Dining (Photo 18) We went to a restaurant on the third floor with a very Arabic decor, though I can’t recall the name. They have an English menu. Next stop, Aswan!
