Xizhi Dajian Mountain Trail: A Half-Day Hike and Cherry Blossom Viewing Adventure

The Xizhi suburban area is known for its mountainous terrain, including several of Taiwan's "Small Hundred Peaks." Among them is "Dajian Mountain," named for its sharp, towering peak that seems to pierce the clouds. Also known as "Xiufeng Mountain" for its picturesque scenery, the mountain becomes a vibrant tapestry of colors every spring as cherry blossoms, osmanthus, azaleas, and sea mangoes bloom in succession, drawing numerous visitors to admire the flowers. There are several ways to hike Dajian Mountain. The most popular—and also the most challenging—route starts from the stone staircase trail next to Tianshou Temple. This path consists of a total of 1,145 steps leading to the summit, making it a true test of both stamina and endurance! If you're looking for a workout that leaves you sweating and feeling the burn, this is the route for you. Personally, I recommend taking the paved road along Qinjin Road. While this route is longer, it is much easier to walk and is lined with blooming cherry blossoms. The highlight is the stretch near the Maitreya Mountain Tiandao Monastery, where both sides of the road are flanked by a breathtaking sea of cherry blossoms. From the back of the monastery, you can reach the summit of Dajian Mountain. Take a moment to rest at the pavilion and enjoy the panoramic view of Taipei City and the cherry blossoms—it's absolutely stunning! For the descent, take the stone staircase back down to Tianshou Temple. This way, the return trip is more relaxed, sparing you from being out of breath or having wobbly legs.
