The temple is said to have been founded in 605 AD by Prince Shotoku. It was named "Kyorinbo" because he preached on land surrounded by woods. The vast garden inside the temple is said to have been designed by Enshu Kobori. The spectacular Momoyama period famous garden lined with moss-covered boulders and the thatched-roof academy (designated cultural property by the city in the early Edo period) create a quiet and peaceful secluded atmosphere. In addition, in late autumn, about 200 ancient maple trees planted in the 2,000-square-meter (1 square meter approximately 3.3 square meters) temple are dyed bright red, contrasting with the thousands of bamboo trees surrounding it, which fascinates worshipers.
