Sam Phan Bok [ Grand Canyon of the Mekong River ]

Sam Phan Bok is a rock rapids or kumpha lak located under the Mekong River in Pho Sai District, Ubon Ratchathani Province. It was formed by the force of the whirlpools, which eroded into more than 3,000 pools. They appear during the dry season when the water level dries up. These rock rapids will emerge from the water like a mountain in the middle of the Mekong River, so the locals call it the “Mekong Grand Canyon.” This phenomenon occurs from around October to May. After that, the rapids will flood and submerge the rapids. The reason they are called “Sam Phan Bok” is because there are more than 3,000 pools, big and small, on the rapids (the word “bok” in Lao means “pool”).
