You may have heard of Angkor Wat. But do you know Polonnaruwa, the "Buddhist Capital" of Sri Lanka? It was once the power center of the medieval Sinhalese kingdom and is recognized by UNESCO as "the most complete ancient Buddhist city site in South Asia." Historical Background In 993 AD, Anuradhapura was invaded, and the Sinhalese kingdom moved its capital here. Between 1153 and 1186, the city was built with a design integrating palaces, temples, stupas, stone inscriptions, and other functional areas. Key Points for Visiting 1️⃣ Southern Area Mainly Potgul Vehara (library), with a central circular building used by monks to study Buddhist scriptures. Nearby is a statue of King Parakramabahu I. The southern area is not large and can be explored in just over half an hour. 2️⃣ Central Area Includes the Quadrangle, Council Chamber, Royal Baths, and the museum. (1) The Quadrangle is highly recommended, featuring the Vatadage (circular stupa) and Gal Potha (a huge stone inscription). (2) Around the Council Chamber are palace ruins and baths. The stone pillars are carved with exquisite floral and animal patterns, and the stairway is guarded by lions symbolizing power and dignity. (3) The Royal Baths, located by the lake, have an entrance next to the Lake View Hotel. Inside are palace ruins; it was once a grand structure possibly seven stories high. 3️⃣ Northern Area Mainly Gal Vihara, with four Buddha statues carved from a single large rock. Travel Tips 1️⃣ The ancient city is quite large; it is recommended to rent a bicycle or hire a car at the entrance to tour around and save energy. 2️⃣ Besides the core "Northern Monument Group," on the way to the new town, you will see a smaller Southern Monument Group, which is worth a visit if you have enough time. 3️⃣ There are few shaded areas in the scenic spot, so be sure to use sun protection or bring an umbrella. 4️⃣ Hidden Spot: Next to the ticket center is the Archaeological Museum, which can be visited together. Note that photography is strictly prohibited inside.
