The best place to view the light show is not at MBS but from the opposite side of the river. You can go to One Fullerton to enjoy the lights show or to the Lantern at The Fullerton Bay Hotel or from the palladian suite, which I have stayed at The Fullerton Hotel. From my palladian suite, I get the entire view of MBS and watch the lights show in the comfort from my suite. I have to tell you, if you are not watching from MBS then you will be unable to watch the visual presentation of Singapore Stories performed at the Lights show, using water fountains, lights and music to enhance the Singapore Story telling. Yes, do try out different ways to watch this Lights show. It will be fun.
