Meandering Through Shawan Ancient Town
This 800 year old town in Guangzhou made for a fun little adventure one afternoon during a long weekend in the city.
I had so much fun just wandering through the rows of old houses and alleyways, where features representing the area's rich cultural heritage lay in wait of discovery. You'll feel like you've traveled back in time while here.
One feature that you definitely won't be able to miss is that of the oyster shell walls! They were made out of a shells, brown sugar, steamed sticky rice and mud, and were believed to be fireproof and soundproof...?!
In any case, you’ll want to check this place out, even if just a couple of hours, to visit the intriguing temples, history-filled halls and pretty pavilions.

Michaela (@uncoveringcities) Donghu Park(东湖公园)| Chilled Park
Donghu Park, one of the four artificial lakes in Guangzhou, is a nice place for visit or a walk in the afternoon. The lake is really big and divides the park into different parts: small pavilion with beautiful flowers(where you can also enjoy a nice view of Canton Tower and its reflection), exercise area, a small island(there is a tea& coffee place, but now under re-construction), kayak, zigzag bridge etc.
It's always my first choice to have a walk in the afternoon and sit on the bench for a while gazing at the small island or read a book, and then head to Guigang market for pig blood soup, and look for some local street food. Quite a relaxing and satisfying afternoon.
🚇 Exit A or B1, Donghu Station, Line 6

Hard Ware Coffee - Great Coffee in Guangzhou
Hidden away in the alleyways of central Guangzhou is one of the city’s best kept little secrets - Hard Ware Coffee.
While the walk to find the café in the first place is a nod back to more traditional times - and the area in general is well worth a wander - the main attraction is always the caffeine.
Designed and decorated to look like a small hardware store from back in the day, this café serves incredible cookies and, most importantly, great coffee - and all from a place where you can’t resist snapping pics.
Be sure to either plan on taking away or be prepared to wait for a while for a table - there aren’t many.

All trips to Guangzhou have to include 2 things: a skyline shot over the Canton Tower at sunrise (or sunset if you’re not a morning person) and then a beaut coffee from Lock Chuck Coffee - one of the best cafes in the city.
10/10 recommend grabbing one of their latte’s and serving of their pancakes. One day, I will grab an understanding of their recipe - but until then, I’ll settle for grabbing one after a morning shoot.
On the canton tower side of things, views from the top give out a 360-degree view of the city. Head there on a misty/cloudy day for a truly surreal view of the opposite skyscrapers leaning out of the clouds ☁️🌁

Liuhuahu Park, Guangzhou
When I woke up early to go for a walk around the park next to my Airbnb, I will admit that this was the last thing that I expected to find.
In a booming city of millions, an abandoned old colonial style building in the middle of a lake doesn’t quite seem to fit- that said it’s an extremely interesting building.
Heading there early while the lighting is still good, you’ll see plenty of people snapping pics of it as backdrops for product photos/ portraits, or just flying their drones around.
The fact that the park is relaxing/ has no loudspeakers and is generally just a nice Sunday morning walk makes this spot just the icing on the cake 🏙

Luxurious Suites and VIP Treatment
The Langham Guangzhou makes for a luxurious stay complemented by sumptuous buffet dining experiences, spacious suites, a rejuvenating indoor pool and fantastic service.
The exterior of the hotel is striking enough in itself, an iconic design that places itself as a clear landmark in the district its located in, but the interiors are what made us fall in love with the place.
The room we stayed in was one of their one-bedroom suite, a modern and elegant space with large windows that let in a lot of light.
Overall, our stay at Langham Place Guangzhou was fantastic, and we were definitely treated like VIPs thanks to all the wonderful staff there.
The hotel is located in the new central business district on Pazhou Island, the southeastern part of the city. The airport is around a 45 minute drive, and both the east and south railway stations are a 30 minute drive on average.
Find it: 638 Xingang East Road, Haizhu District, Guangzhou
