After reading, you’ll know where to go. 1️⃣ Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture | Gansu While others squeeze along the Yellow River in Lanzhou, I took the kids straight to Linxia. It’s at a high altitude, with average August temperatures just over 20 degrees Celsius. You’ll even need a light jacket in the mornings and evenings. 📍 Liujiagxia Tourist Resort has wide-open water and a refreshing breeze. You can take a speedboat to see the “Mandarin duck pot” phenomenon where the Yellow River and Tao River meet—the kids were fascinated. In the afternoon, visit the Bingling Temple World Cultural Heritage site. Take a boat into the grottoes and enjoy the canyon scenery, which is much more interesting than walking on flat ground. ⚠️ Remember to bring sun-protective clothing for the kids. Take the kids to see the tide under the “Forty-four Bridges” in Shuzhuang Garden, then visit the Piano Museum for a guided tour. It’s cool and interesting indoors. In the afternoon, return to the island and walk the Railway Culture Park. The abandoned railway tracks have been turned into a shaded trail from Wenping Road to Heping Pier, mostly downhill and not tiring. In the evening, visit Xiamen Botanical Garden. When it comes to summer trips with kids, I’ve always felt many people pick the wrong destinations. Popular spots are packed like sardines, while lesser-known places are actually cooler and more fun. These 6 places are ones I’ve visited repeatedly with my kids. They have fewer people, beautiful scenery, kids have a great time, and adults don’t get worn out. 01 Zhumadian | Henan Chaya Mountain is different from what I imagined. It’s not a bare rocky mountain. The trails are shaded, and the Journey to the West-themed sculptures keep kids entertained along the way. Before you know it, you’ve been walking for 2 hours. ⏰ It’s best to enter before 8 AM when the mountain breeze is still cool. Sitting by the lakeside corridor halfway up the mountain and enjoying the breeze is very refreshing. Lao Leshan has stronger winds. After 3 PM, you can fly kites on the grassy slopes. When kids get tired, they can lie down on the grass without worrying about sunburn. ⚠️ There are few supply points on the mountain, so bring your own water and snacks. You can buy some wild vegetable pancakes at the farmhouse at the foot of the mountain for the trip. 🚄 It takes about 40 minutes by taxi from Zhumadian West Station to Chaya Mountain. A round-trip private car costs just over 200 yuan. Don’t skimp on this when traveling with kids. 02 Linxia | Gansu Liujiaxia Tourist Resort is really cool in summer. The water is wide and open, and the breeze carries moisture. Kids can spend half an hour throwing stones by the shore. For the boat tour, I recommend the short route since long trips can make kids restless. Bingling Temple World Cultural Heritage site is on the other side of the reservoir. Morning visits are best. The shaded plank road opposite the grottoes is great. Kids ask lots of questions about the Buddha statues. If you can’t answer, just read the info boards together. It’s very interactive. 🍜 Have hand-pulled lamb and a bowl of Hezhou buns at the farmhouse near the entrance. Both adults and kids will be full. ⚠️ UV rays are strong in the afternoon. Don’t skip hats and sunscreen. There’s no shade by the lake. 03 Huangshan | Anhui I suggest choosing either Xidi or Hongcun, not both, when traveling with kids. Hongcun’s waterways are a hit with kids. Walking along the irrigation channels and watching villagers wash vegetables and clothes can hold their attention for a long time. Xidi is quieter, with narrow alleys and slippery stone paths, so it’s not stroller-friendly. Better for older kids. Chengkan Ancient Village has fewer visitors. Tickets include a guided tour that explains the details of Huizhou architecture. ⏰ After 5 PM, the light is just right. White walls and black tiles glow warm orange in the sunset. Kids run around the drying yard while adults rest on the stone steps. ⚠️ Mosquitoes are common in the ancient villages. Long pants and insect repellent are essential. I didn’t take my kids up Huangshan Scenic Area because of long cable car lines and kids getting restless. It’s better to stay overnight in Tangkou Town at the foot of the mountain and take a gentle slope trail early the next morning to enjoy the clouds and mist. 04 Bayingolin | Xinjiang Bayanbulak Grassland is so cold in the evening during summer you’ll need a light down jacket. The winding viewing platform has 18 bends. ⏰ Sunset is around 8:30 PM, and the light turns the river golden. Kids lean on the railing counting the bends, more focused than watching cartoons. ⚠️ The last shuttle bus in the scenic area leaves at 10 PM. Don’t linger for the last bit of light. Catching the last bus with kids is stressful. Taklamakan Desert’s Tarim Poplar Forest Park is not recommended in summer because it’s hot and buggy. It’s better in autumn. If you want a desert experience, go to the sand dunes outside the park. After 6 PM, the sand cools enough for kids to walk barefoot and giggle. 🍜 Eat the town’s baked buns while hot. Crispy skin and savory meat. Kids can eat two at once. 05 Xiamen | Fujian I advise against climbing Sunlight Rock on Gulangyu Island with kids. The steps are narrow and crowded. You’ll sweat going up and your legs will feel weak coming down. Instead, stroll slowly along Bishan Road on the north side of the island. Old villas have bougainvillea blooming on the walls. Kids can pick fallen flowers and arrange patterns quietly for half an hour. The Railway Culture Park is a flat, shaded trail made from abandoned tracks, stroller-friendly, ending at the west gate of the Botanical Garden. The rainforest world in Xiamen Botanical Garden looks like a fairyland when the mist sprays. Kids get excited and scream, but the ground is slippery, so hold hands. ⏰ Mist sprays from 9 AM to 11 AM and 3 PM to 5 PM. Time your visit accordingly. ⚠️ You can buy vegetarian cakes at Nanputuo Temple, but avoid street vendors at the entrance. Buy authentic ones inside the temple shop. 🚄 Taxi from Xiamen North Station to downtown costs about 50 yuan. Staying near Zhongshan Road makes it easy to walk to the ferry terminal for night views. 06 Pingxiang | Jiangxi Wugong Mountain, I only recommend taking two cable cars up with kids. The hiking trails have great views but many steps. If kids can’t keep up, you’ll have to carry them, which isn’t worth it. After the cable car, walk a wooden plank trail. The meadows ripple green in the wind. Kids touch the grass tips and say they feel like puppy fur. ⏰ Weather changes quickly on the mountain. Afternoon showers are common. Bring a lightweight raincoat for kids; it’s easier than using an umbrella. 🍜 The visitor center at the foot serves fried noodles and mugwort rice cakes. Kids get messy but love it. ⚠️ Accommodation at the summit is basic. For kids, it’s better to stay at a guesthouse halfway up with private bathrooms. You can stargaze at night. 🚄 Taxi from Pingxiang North Station to Wugong Mountain takes about 40 minutes. Shared rides cost about 30 yuan per person. 07 Shanghai The Expo Park is less crowded now, good for kids to see architecture. The dynamic version of the Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival at the China Art Museum kept my kid watching three times without wanting to leave. The air conditioning is strong, perfect for escaping summer afternoons. Avoid Yu Garden on weekends. The Nine-Bend Bridge is packed. Arrive at 9 AM on weekdays. Kids can crawl through rock caves while you watch koi fish quietly. No disturbance. The underwater museum at Guangfulin Cultural Site makes kids ask, “How are houses underwater?” If you can’t explain, let them explore the models. They remember better that way. At Disney Resort, one tip: don’t buy early access passes. Well-rested kids are happier than squeezing in extra rides. The afternoon parade is more fun for kids. ⚠️ Guangfulin is closed on Mondays. Don’t go for nothing. 08 Alxa | Inner Mongolia Poplar Forest Tourist Area in late August still has green leaves and very few people. It feels like having the place to yourself. Kids play hide and seek among thousand-year-old poplar trunks while you lean against roots watching clouds. The wind is dry and cool. The sand dunes in Badain Jaran Desert are best visited after 6 PM. The sand warmed all day feels pleasantly warm under bare feet, not hot. Rent a sandboard for kids to slide down the dunes. They laugh until hoarse while you watch the sunset from the top. It’s more healing than any amusement park. ⚠️ There’s no signal in the desert. Download offline maps in advance and fill up your tank before entering. 🍜 The town’s camel meat pies are initially rejected by kids but after one bite, they fight over them. When traveling with kids, don’t pack your itinerary too full. One main attraction plus one backup each day lets kids have fun and adults stay relaxed. My top pick is Bayanbulak. The perceived temperature is about 10 degrees cooler than the city, and best of all, they’re not crowded. NO.1 Lhasa | Tibet Many think Lhasa is only cold in winter, but July and August are when it truly feels like a natural air-conditioned room. Daytime temperatures hover just above 20 degrees, dropping to 10 degrees at night. Wearing short sleeves outside will have you shivering in the wind, so a fleece jacket is a must. 📍 Namtso Lake, at 4,700 meters elevation, where the wind by the lake is strong enough to blow your hat into the water. After 3 PM, clouds press down, turning the lake from sapphire blue to grayish blue—a scene more stunning than any filter. ⚠️ Don’t stay by the lake too long; the wind can cause headaches, and altitude sickness is no joke. Back in the city, the Potala Palace square lights up at 7:30 PM. The white palace walls glow under the lights. Sitting at the Yowang Mountain viewing platform waiting for nightfall, you can watch the whole city slowly sink into deep blue. People are always prostrating in front of Jokhang Temple. You don’t need to understand why—just standing nearby for 10 minutes will calm your mind. 🍜 At Barkhor Street’s sweet tea house, a pot costs just five yuan. Sit down and drink a warm cup—it works better than any altitude sickness medicine. NO.2 Dongguan | Guangdong Summer in Guangdong is usually like a steam room, but Dongguan is a bit of an exception. Don’t laugh—the sea breeze under the Humen Bridge is genuinely cool. 📍 Humen Bridge, go after 4:30 PM. Standing on the steps of the old Weiyuan Fort, the sea breeze blows in from the Pearl River Estuary, salty and briny, making it hard to keep your eyes open. But that coolness is real and much more comfortable than air conditioning. ⚠️ Never go at noon; there’s no shade on the bridge, and the ground is hot enough to fry an egg. At 6 PM, the bridge lights up, stretching across the river like a golden ribbon. Fishing boats slowly pass underneath. Any photo you take with your phone will make a great wallpaper. 🚄 It’s about a 40-minute taxi ride from downtown Dongguan. Tell the driver to take the riverside road to enjoy the sea view—it’s more interesting than the highway. NO.3 Xinyang | Henan When I think of summer escapes in Henan, Songshan Mountain doesn’t come to mind first—it’s Jigong Mountain. Located south of Xinyang at 800 meters elevation, the average summer temperature is 24℃. The villas on the mountaintop were built by foreigners during the Republic of China era. With red tiles and white walls hidden in the woods, stepping inside feels like traveling back in time. 📍 Jigong Mountain ancient hiking trail, start climbing at 7 AM. Trees on both sides of the stone steps block the sun completely. By halfway up, you can feel the cool air rising from your feet. ⚠️ Don’t take the cable car; it only goes halfway up and has a 40-minute wait. Climbing yourself is faster—about two hours to the top. At the summit, Baoxiao Peak, the wind is so strong you can barely stand, but the view is incredible. These eight cities are my personal “just right for three days” list, offering a mix of local life, wild charm, art, and history all in one trip. 01 Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture | Xinjiang The wheat fields in Jiangbulake are the most unreal “grassland” I’ve ever seen. From late May to early June, the wheat just starts to sprout, covering the gentle slopes in lush green. When the wind blows, it looks like waves rolling in the sea. Don’t rush to take the shuttle bus. Walk half an hour from the entrance, and you’ll reach the heart of the wheat fields, with soft meadows underfoot and a sky so blue it feels crisp above. ⏰ After 6 PM, the light hits at an angle, turning the wheat waves golden. Any photo you take with your phone looks like wallpaper. Don’t expect too much from Colorful Bay; it’s better suited for geology enthusiasts.
