Mangkam Songtsen Rumai Resort is located in Mangkam County, Qamdo City, Tibet Autonomous Region. The guest rooms are very large and comfortable, the public areas are also much larger, and most importantly, the surrounding environment is very good, facing the Lancang River. The price-performance ratio for a house price of around 1,000 is still acceptable. If I have the chance, I will still deliberately stay here. Depart from Chengdu, take the 🚄 to Kangding, then transfer. Xinduqiao is your first stop. Don't rush to take photos; check in first. The evening light turns the poplar trees golden, and any bend in the road makes for a great shot. Mugecuo is less crowded in the morning, and the lake is as still as a mirror. Remember to wear non-slip shoes, as the boardwalks can be dewy. Admission and shuttle bus for Daocheng Yading cost over 200. If you take the long route, bring an oxygen canister and a raincoat. It gets windy on the mountain after 3:00 PM, so head down early. For glaciers in Hailuogou, the cable car is easier, but if you're fit, the hiking trail offers a closer view of the ice tongue. ⚠️ Book accommodation in Yading Village in advance during peak season; finding a room on-site is expensive and dirty. To keep the budget under 3,000, stay in hostels and Tibetan guesthouses throughout the trip. 2️⃣ Guiyang City | Guizhou Guiyang is truly cool in the summer, and it can even get a bit cold in the morning and evening. Tianhetan is a 30-minute drive from the city center. Admission and boat tickets cost just over 100. The caves and waterfalls are connected; the whole tour takes 2 hours. It's best to go in the morning when the light shines into the caves. Visit Qingyan Ancient Town in the afternoon. Trotters and rose candy are must-haves, but don't buy them on the main street; walk two alleys in and the price is half. Gaopo Yunding Grassland is best in the evening. It's windy, so bring a light jacket. Seeing the sunset and sea of clouds depends on luck, but the grassland is free. Huaxi Park is in the city center. Admission is 10. It's where locals go for walks and a good place to rest if you're tired. 🍜 For breakfast, try Changwang noodles with crispy pork and blood curd for 12 a bowl. ⚠️ It rains unexpectedly in Guiyang, so carry an umbrella and don't trust the weather forecast. Choose accommodation near Penshuichi for easy access to attractions; you can find a nice place for 150 per person. 3️⃣ Datong City | Shanxi Datong's prices are impressive. Yungang Grottoes admission is 120, but the audio guide is 20. I recommend renting one, or you'll just be looking at things without context. It's best to visit the grottoes in the morning when the light hits the Buddha statues at an angle, making their expressions vivid. It gets crowded after noon, which ruins the experience. Hanging Temple is in Hunyuan County, over an hour's drive from the city. Admission including the climbing fee is over 100. If you're afraid of heights, just looking from below is fine; it's not that special up there. Visit Mount Heng and the Hanging Temple together. Take the cable car up and walk down; the whole trip takes 4 hours. If you're not very fit, don't push yourself. ⚠️ Don't eat Daoxiao noodles at the entrance of tourist spots. Go to old shops in the city for 8 a bowl, with free extra sauce. Stay near the ancient city wall to enjoy the night view; it costs about 100 per person. 🚄 A taxi from Datong South Station to Yungang Grottoes costs around 20. Don't take unlicensed taxis soliciting passengers on the roadside. 4️⃣ Ningde City | Fujian Ningde is an underrated coastal city. Taimu Mountain admission is 120, but the rocks on the mountain are more interesting than the people. When walking through the "Yixiantian" (a narrow crevice), you have to turn sideways; larger people might get stuck, but that's part of the fun. Baishuiyang and Yuanyangxi are great places for water activities in summer. The water in the shallow square only reaches your ankles, making it safe for children and the elderly. Admission is around 100. Remember to bring a waterproof bag. To see the sunrise at Beiqi Mudflat in Xiapu, wake up early and arrive by 5:30 AM. The photography spot is on a small hill behind the village. It's free, but the road is narrow, so don't drive up. Xiapu Mudflat and Beiqi are actually connected. After watching the sunrise, walk along the coastline; at low tide, you can see fishermen catching seafood. ⚠️ Check the price list carefully at Xiapu seafood stalls before ordering; octopus and mixed fish are the easiest to overcharge for. Stay in the county town for easy access to attractions; it costs about 120 per person. 5️⃣ Chongzuo City | Guangxi Chongzuo's landscape rivals Guilin's, but with half the crowds. Detian Transnational Waterfall admission plus shuttle bus is over 100. When you take a bamboo raft to the bottom of the waterfall, the mist hits your face. Across the river is Ban Gioc Waterfall in Vietnam—you can see two countries at once. Mingshi Scenic Area is a 30-minute drive from Detian. Admission is 80, but the highlight is the free cycling path. Rent a bike and explore slowly; rice paddies, phoenix-tail bamboo, and karst peaks are all right in front of you. ⚠️ Don't buy cigarettes or perfume from the Vietnamese stalls at Detian Waterfall; it's hard to tell if they're real. Stay at a homestay near Mingshi Scenic Area; you'll see mountains as soon as you open the window. It costs about 150 per person. 🍜 Sour porridge and roasted suckling pig are local specialties. Small shops in the county town are half the price of those in tourist areas. This place is perfect for a slow-paced trip; two days and one night is just right. 6️⃣ Pingliang City | Gansu Pingliang only has Kongtong Mountain, but it's worth a special trip. Admission is 110, cable car extra. I recommend hiking up; although tiring, the scenery at Qipanling and Leisheng Peak halfway up is better than at the summit. Enter the mountain at 7:00 AM when the air is cool. It takes about 2 hours to reach Zhongtai. You might meet elderly men practicing martial arts on the way—the Kongtong sect is no joke. The incense at the summit is very popular, but don't get roped into fortune-telling. ⚠️ Food on the mountain is expensive and tastes bad, so bring your own snacks and water. After coming down, go to the city for mutton paomo for 30 a bowl; they are generous with the meat. 🚄 It's a 40-minute bus ride from Pingliang Station to Kongtong Mountain, or 30 by taxi. Stay in Kongtong District for about 100 per person. Pingliang is just over 20°C in summer, making it a great place to escape the heat, but there's a large temperature difference between day and night, so bring a jacket. 7️⃣ Shanghai Can you travel to Shanghai on a budget? Yes, but you have to choose wisely. The Expo Park is free to enter. The animated "Along the River During the Qingming Festival" at the China Art Museum is stunning, but it's closed on Mondays, so don't make a wasted trip. Yuyuan Garden admission is 40, but the surrounding alleys are the real highlight. The crab roe soup dumplings at City God Temple are expensive and mediocre; locals prefer eating scallion oil noodles in the old alleys nearby. Guangfulin Relics Park is in Songjiang, an hour away by subway and bus. The underwater museum's architecture is unique. Admission is 30, and it's not crowded, making it perfect for a leisurely stroll. Forget about Disney Resort; tickets are expensive and lines are long. Budget travelers can just take photos of the castle from outside, or go to the nearby Wishing Star Park, which is free and offers a view of the fireworks. 📍 Choose accommodation along the subway line, such as Jiuting or Xinzhuang. You can stay in a chain hotel for 200 per person, which is half the price of the city center. 🍜 You can find delicious pan-fried buns and potstickers at any old shop in Shanghai; 10 will fill you up. 8️⃣ Linzhi City | Tibet Linzhi is the lowest altitude place in Tibet, suitable for first-time visitors. Bomi is a small town on National Highway 318. August and September are the seasons when highland barley ripens. Golden wheat fields against snow-capped mountains make every photo look like a wallpaper. Basum Lake admission plus shuttle bus is over 100. The lake water is unbelievably blue. Walk around the temple on the island in the middle of the lake and you can hear the sound of prayer flags fluttering in the wind. The section of the Yunnan-Tibet Highway from Markam to Linzhi has good road conditions and the richest scenery, but chartering a car isn't cheap; carpooling costs 300–400 per person per day.
