Munnar: India’s Emerald Escape in the Western Ghats
#cityplaybook
High in the Western Ghats of Kerala, Munnar unfurls like a green dream — rolling hills blanketed in tea gardens, mist swirling through eucalyptus trees, and quiet that invites you to breathe deeper. It’s not just scenic; it’s soul-soothing.
Driving into Munnar, the air turns cooler, the roads wind tighter, and soon you’re surrounded by endless waves of emerald plantations. I stayed at a hilltop homestay where mornings began with fresh cardamom chai and the sight of sunbeams dancing through the mist. The silence, broken only by birdsong, was healing.
One highlight was the Kolukkumalai Tea Estate, the world’s highest organic tea plantation. The jeep ride up was rugged, but the sunrise from the peak was unforgettable — golden light washing over the valley and turning the hills into liquid jade.
Eravikulam National Park, home to the rare Nilgiri Tahr, gave me my wildlife fix, while the trek to Anamudi Peak offered a panoramic sweep of Kerala’s green heart. And then there were the waterfalls — Attukad, Lakkam, and Valara — cascading through dense forest like nature’s own lullabies.
What mattered most? The slowness. The way time stretched with each sip of tea, each foggy walk, each quiet sunset over the hills.
Best time to visit: September to March, when the weather is cool and the hills are lush.
Getting there: Closest airport is Cochin International Airport (about 110 km). Buses and taxis are available, but a private cab is ideal for exploring at your own pace.
Tip: Carry warm layers, especially in the evenings. Book tea factory tours in advance for a deeper dive into Munnar’s legacy.
