[Fukushima] Abukuma Cave
As far as I could find, there were no buses from the JR station a few kilometers away, so it may be difficult to access Abukuma Cave without a car or tour bus. Also, as written on the official website, even the normal course is unstable and has quite a few ups and downs, so I highly recommend wearing comfortable sneakers and going only when your legs are in perfect condition!
Still, the magnificent space where you can experience the feeling of exploring is a must-see! I went there in the middle of winter, but the temperature inside the cave is constant all year round and the humidity is high, so it was a different world from the outside, so I ended up wearing short sleeves while climbing and descending the stairs. Also, my glasses fogged up! I personally recommend contact lenses to enjoy the spectacular view. Also, I think it's absolutely necessary to wipe the lens of your camera if you take photos.
At first I thought Abukuma Cave was a natural monument, but to be precise, the designated course was the "Irimizu Cave" which is a course at a slightly distant entrance. This course seems to be quite a serious cave exploration, as you have to change clothes and be accompanied by a guide at the back. I went there late at night, so they had already stopped accepting reservations.
In addition to the course open to the public, the cave is very long and there seem to be undiscovered areas that have not yet been fully explored, making it a place where you can feel the romance of limestone caves.
So, I was able to add Fukushima Prefecture to my record of traveling around the country.

Abukuma Cave on a rainy day
From Koriyama Station, it's a 45-minute train ride to Kamata Station, and from there you can take a taxi or walk to Abukuma Cave.
It's a pretty big limestone cave. Maybe it was because it was a rainy day or because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but we had the place almost to ourselves to explore.
But it might be a little scary to explore alone. There were also some bats flying around and they got pretty close. If you're lucky, you can see them on the road before entering the cave.
The fare is 1200 yen, and the exploration course costs an additional 200 yen. If you buy a ticket online, you can get a 200 yen discount. If you take a taxi to Abukuma Cave, you'll get a coupon that looks like a 200 yen discount for a gift.
The gift was an Orion-chan magnet and sticky note.

🚗 A Bustling Highway Break: Quick Lunch at Abukuma Kogen SA
We stopped by Abukuma Kogen Service Area (Northbound) for a quick lunch on our drive from Narita International Airport to Koriyama, and it turned out to be a pretty lively rest stop—definitely one of the more popular ones along the highway.
The service area was bustling during the afternoon, with lots of people grabbing lunch or taking a break. It had that familiar Japanese efficiency to it—order, eat, go—but also a warm, local vibe. That said, the menu was entirely in Japanese, and food had to be ordered via a vending machine. So if you’re not confident with the language, it can be a bit tricky to navigate.
As for the food, it did the job for a highway pit stop. I had a pork cutlet set, and while the portion was decent, parts of the katsu were unfortunately overcooked and slightly burnt. Not the best meal, but still good enough to fill the stomach for the journey ahead.
After eating, we explored a souvenir section nearby, which had a small selection of local snacks and goods—perfect for picking up something quick to take along or bring home.
Overall, Abukuma Kogen SA is a practical stop with solid facilities, though the food could be hit or miss. Great for a rest, a bite, and a quick browse before hitting the road again.

Various stalactites are connected over a total length of 600 metres, and are characterised by the large number of their types and numbers.
There are many things to see in the cave, such as the fantastic "Moon World", which introduced a dimming system for stage production for the first time in a stalactite cave in Japan, and the "Dragon Palace", a hall about 13 metres high where unique stalactites are gathered.
At "Takine Goten", the largest hall in Abukuma Cave, which is 29 metres high, you can enjoy up close the precious stalactites that can only be seen here, such as crystal curtains and cave corals.

Abukuma Cave in Autumn
#AutumnTrip
#trip2022 #Fukushima #AbukumaCave
I went to Abukuma Cave in Fukushima Prefecture, where you can enjoy autumn leaves and one of the largest limestone caves in Japan.
The limestone cave, created by nature over a long period of time, is very moving. The ground is wet, so I recommend wearing shoes that you don't mind getting dirty, and there are steep stairs, so I recommend wearing comfortable clothes.
