[2025 Asakura Attraction] Travel Guide for Akizuki Castle Ruins (Updated Apr)

I used my day off work to refresh myself with cherry blossom viewing and a hot spring. I heard that the weeping cherry trees in Ukiha were in full bloom, so I went there. I had some Ukiha apple curry on the way there, and the apple pie was delicious! Unfortunately, it was cloudy that day, but the weeping cherry trees were in full bloom. After that, I drove to the ruins of Akizuki Castle and enjoyed the cherry blossom trees in the castle town. Since I had come all the way to Ukiha on the way back, I went to Kotohira Onsen in Hita. The alkaline hot spring made my skin smooth. 2,000 yen for a family bath is cheap, so I was glad. #cherryblossomviewing

I went to Akizuki to see the Hina dolls, which are on display on weekends until March 5th. The many beautiful Hina dolls are lined up on the stairs leading to the shrine at the Akizuki Castle ruins. Akizuki is Kyushu's Little Kyoto. The seasons of cherry blossoms and autumn leaves are also beautiful. Although the display is on weekends, they will also be on display on March 3rd, the Girl's Festival.

It is a small castle in the form of a Jinya, and the castle is divided into the Omote-Goden (official hall) where Akizuki Junior High School is located and the Oku-Goden (the living place of the feudal lord). Today, the Kuromon has been moved to the main entrance of the Tsurugi Shrine, which is dedicated to Nagaoki. In the past, it was built as a large gate deep in the Kawashikawa area. The "Nagaya Gate" that served as a general door is the only historical site built in its original location. It takes 45 minutes to drive from Fukuoka City to Akizuki Castle Ruins. Before setting off, I checked the autumn leaves forecast online, which was quite accurate. The history of Akizuki Castle dates back to the 1200s, although it was abolished in the 1900s. 🏖️Environment/Facilities: However, the preserved Black Gate and Longhouse Gate have now become important historical sites, surrounded by nature. The Akizuki Castle ruins are not very large, and even taking photos only takes an hour to complete. In winter, the sunset time is early, starting at 4 pm. The red leaves under the sunset show the autumn atmosphere. #cherryblossom2024 The mountain fortress that inspired Kurosawa and Lucas Akizuki Castle was the home of the powerful clan of the same name, which once ruled most of the lands of present-day Fukuoka Prefecture. The history of these places inspired two great directors — Akira Kurosawa and George Lucas — to create wonderful films. The castle and the city built around it are small (you can get around them in one day), but here you can feel the living breath of history. How to get there Akizuki Castle is located 45 minutes from Fukuoka. You can get there by train, bus or car. Take the JR Kagoshima Railway Line from Hakata Station to Kiyama Station and transfer to the Amagi Line to Amagi Station, then take the bus. A charming city with a rich history There is a breath of history in the city and Akizuki Castle. The castle was built in 1203 and rebuilt several times. They lived here until the beginning of the Meiji era (1873). Now all that remains of the castle are the stone walls and restored sections of the ancient gate, including the impressive Black Kuromon Gate. There are several famous temples in the city. Cedars used to grow here, but in honor of the victory in the Russian-Japanese War, cherries were planted in their place. A secret fortress at the top of the mountain A three-hour walk will take you from the city center to the top of Kose Mountain and the ruins of Akizuki Fortress. In 1958, these places inspired Akira Kurosawa to create the film "The Hidden Fortress". This picture also played a significant role in modern pop culture, influencing, in turn, George Lucas when he wrote the script for the first series of "Star Wars". A little bit about local cooking In Akizuki you will taste excellent food and wine. The Seiruan Ryokan is located in the forest, a traditional hotel with a charming outdoor onsen.
