A Walk Through History – The UNESCO Medina Tetouan’s Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the most authentic and well-preserved in Morocco. Unlike the bustling souks of Marrakesh or Fes, Tetouan’s Medina feels more local and intimate, with narrow streets, traditional crafts, and friendly artisans. Walking through its alleys, I saw handmade textiles, intricate woodwork, and beautiful zellige tilework reflecting the city’s deep Andalusian roots. Andalusian Influence & Spanish Charm Tetouan has a strong Spanish influence, a legacy from the Andalusian refugees who settled here centuries ago. The Spanish Quarter, with its colonial-style buildings, lively plazas, and charming cafés, gave the city a unique European touch. One of the highlights was Plaza Primo, where I enjoyed a coffee while admiring the blend of Moroccan and Spanish architecture. Coastal Beauty & Mountain Views Just outside the city, Tetouan offers access to some of Morocco’s most beautiful Mediterranean beaches. Martil and Cabo Negro are perfect for a seaside escape. North Africa Morocco Tunisia Tour (7) World Heritage Site - Medina of Tétouan Tétouan - Chefchaouen December 14, 2024 Cloudy, 12-20°C. We left Tangier and drove for an hour and a half to the World Heritage Site - Tétouan, a historic city in northwestern Morocco (Figure 1). Since the 8th century, the Medina of Tétouan has been an important city during the Islamic period. Although it is one of the smallest Arab settlements in Morocco, it is undoubtedly the most complete and least influenced by external influences. We entered the city gate (Figure 2) and saw the palace (Figure 3). Led by a local guide, we walked into the short streets and narrow alleys of the community (Figure 4) and visited the traditional market (Figure 5) to experience the local customs. The streets and alleys in the city are winding, and there are many shops (Figure 6). The city is famous for its fine leather, hand-woven carpets, and copperware, as well as more than 80 mosques and other cultural buildings (Figure 7). It is not only an ancient city and a famous historical and cultural city, but also a holy city (Figure 8). At noon, we had lunch at a special restaurant in the ancient city (Figure 9). After lunch, we headed to the sixth stop - Chefchaouen.
