Today I walked all over York, England, an ancient city that "concentrates British history". From the medieval city walls to Harry Potter's Wizarding Alley, every second felt like falling into a time tunnel! ✨ 🌿 York City Walls in the morning light Start the morning at York City Walls. This wall built by the ancient Romans is 3.4 kilometers long and is the best-preserved medieval relic in the UK! This time I passed by and decided to spend a day revisiting the old place, first going to Harry Potter's Evil Horn Alley, which is actually made up of two different Harry Potter gift shops, one or two shops selling very different items, including wizard robes, wands, even wizard chess, golden eggs for sale! Afterwards, walk along the road to visit #cliffordtower, a medieval guarded castle of Clifford Tower, a circular defensive castle that requires walking up via a long staircase, however be careful as it will be cooler inside the castle if going up on a windy day. Then detour next door and find York's shopping district, which contains many British restaurants, as well as several famous English afternoon tea shops including Betty's, mostly selling cakes, biscuits, ice cream, and tea and coffee. However, I tried another small shop, their scone has a lot of raisins, most importantly the combination of clotted cream clotted cream and marshmallow jam, the taste is combined with other afternoon teas I have eaten, more floral 💰Average consumption per person: Grape scone + English afternoon tea £11.50

I traveled from Cambridge to York, only allocating half a day for York. As someone who isn't a Harry Potter fan, I didn't feel like York had much to offer me. Fortunately, the city isn't too big, making a half-day city walk quite suitable. Below is my city walk route, perfect for experiencing York's charm in a short time. If you're a Harry Potter fan, this route is also a classic: York City Walls → York Minster → The Shambles → Clifford's Tower ⭐Highlights ✅York City Walls: Not far from the hotel, you can see the city walls surrounding York's old town. They are said to be about 3.4 km long. Due to time constraints, we only walked a small section. According to the introduction, the York City Walls were built by the ancient Romans and are the best-preserved and longest medieval city walls in England. They are centered around York Minster and form a square. However, I personally feel that most of it has been restored. ✅York Minster: This is the largest existing medieval Gothic cathedral in Europe and York's most noteworthy ancient building. The cathedral's construction began in 627 AD, and what we see today was rebuilt in 1470. The cathedral's interior hall served as the filming location for the Great Hall of Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films. The large expanse of stained glass on the southeast side is said to be the largest medieval stained-glass window in the world. We didn't climb to the top because it was getting late, which was a bit of a pity. ✅The Shambles: This is probably York's most famous spot, as it's the inspiration for Diagon Alley in Harry Potter. It's also the most complete medieval street preserved in England to date. The street is lined with ancient wooden-framed buildings, all built very low, only one or two stories high. This is said to be a measure to prevent the spread of fire during medieval times. It might be better to visit at night. We went during the day and it felt a bit ordinary, and there were many people taking photos. Also, "The Little Devil" is a very popular souvenir here. ✅Clifford's Tower: A landmark building in York, it's one of the few remaining ruins of York Castle, located opposite the York Castle Museum. From the tower, you can overlook the beautiful scenery of York. Clifford's Tower itself is not large, but according to the introduction, it was once a royal mint and even the site of one of the worst antisemitic massacres in the Middle Ages, which is hard to imagine. Personally, I feel that apart from the Minster, York's attractions are a bit underwhelming, but the city walk through these medieval streets is quite enjoyable. 📖Practical Information 🚗Transportation: York is not big. Starting from hotels in York city center, walking is sufficient. Walking plus sightseeing takes 2–3 hrs. 🎫Tickets: York Minster £18, climbing to the top £5, Clifford's Tower £9 (I personally don't think it's worth going inside).

#uktrip I recently visited the castle wall ruins, and while it was an interesting experience, I found it to be quite overpriced. The site offers a beautiful view of the city, which was definitely a highlight, and it made for a nice family outing. Walking along the historic ruins and seeing the old buildings was enjoyable, and the atmosphere was peaceful. However, I was disappointed by the cost of the tickets. For the price, there wasn’t much to do, and I expected more for the amount paid. Additionally, the donation request at the ticket counter felt quite aggressive, which made the experience a little uncomfortable. While I appreciate the importance of preserving historical sites, I believe the pricing should better reflect what is offered. Overall, it was nice to see the ruins once, but due to the high ticket prices and limited activities, I wouldn’t visit again.

The view from the top though I was met with an ominous cloud was stunning. Being able to see such a beautiful city so easily was amazing, and free as an English heritage member. The inside of the tower allows you to learn the history of the invasion but the highlight really is climbing all the stairs to the top. Vertigo aside it really is a must do in York! #wheretogo The Clifford’s Tower is such an amazing piece of history from the 1000s. It was previously a Royal Mint, a medival stronghold and a Civil War garrison. It has since been restored with modern fittings and new walkways and staircases. It sits on a small hill against the picturesque backdrop of York. Inside the tower there are many information boards describing the history of the tower from the very beginning. Take the spiral staircase up to the roof terrace and be greeted with a incredible view of York’s historic skyline. This attraction is not stroller or wheelchair friendly as there are many steep stairs and narrow pathways so take note. The queues were pretty long when I visited but it moved quickly. You can get your tickets at the entrance for £9.50 or book online. It was well worth the visit as it’s such a beautiful place. You have got to come here when in York, highly reccomended!

We went to York Minster and hung around the city. Betty’s tea room is very nice. Although the afternoon tea is very famous, I would suggest takeaways from their bakery. Not only to avoid the queues but also the price is more reasonable. The pizza and bakery were fantastic as well. suggested visit time: 3 -4 days
