Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine: A Symbol of Kyushu
Students come here to pray for success in their exams. This shrine is dedicated to students praying for academic achievement, and it is frequently visited by students for this purpose. A long street leads from the Nishitetsu train station to the shrine, lined with local seasonal delicacies. At the end of the street, near the temple entrance with the bull statue, stands a famous wooden Starbucks. The area is rich with various trees and historical stories. Although the shrine is crowded with praying students and teachers during exam periods, the garden behind the main building offers a peaceful retreat.
On your way back, make sure to stop at the local Starbucks. Among the many Starbucks cafes nationwide, none is perhaps more famous than the Dazaifu Starbucks in Fukuoka. This stunning building was designed by world-renowned architect Kengo Kuma. The interior of the Dazaifu Starbucks uses about 2,000 pieces of these 'thin woods,' resembling the inside of a giant handwoven basket.

This Shrine was said to be built to honour and dedicate to the God of learning and you be able to see the background story of the Shrine which dates back at least more than 1000AD ago. Apart from the Shrine, nearby there are also alot of traditional snack shops and souvenir shop where most tourists will flock to after the walk in the Shrine.
Oh also, if you are a Starbucks fan, there is this cool looking Starbucks located near the Shrine. It was so crowded so we decided not to go inside but took a photo of the Starbucks design from the outside instead.

Japanese literary star tube original Michizane Dazaifu Tenmangu.
Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is a shrine built on the tomb of Sugawara Michizane. Together with Kitano Tenmangu Shrine in Kyoto, it is the headquarters of all Tenmangu shrines in Japan. Michizane Sugawara was an influential scholar in Japan's Heian period, so many Japanese students who prayed for his name on the gold medal list would come here to pay homage.
This reminds me of the annual college entrance examination and high school entrance examination in our country. A considerable number of parents will go to temples to pray for blessings and hope that their children will go well. Although we have passed the era where one test determines a lifetime, students who study hard and parents who work hard are all looking forward to good results, so it is inevitable that they will pass the test. In fact, life is like a marathon. A momentary burst is very valuable, but persistence, not giving up, and hard work on the way are all moving towards the end. There is more than one choice in life. It is very important to do what you like. It is a long road without love. It’s hard to persevere. I wish everyone can find their own love and beauty.

Highlights: A very interesting shrine. The highlight is tourists praying by looping the bull's head. There are many places to explore. Fukuoka Dazaifu Tenmangu: The Sacred Site of the God of Learning
Dazaifu Tenmangu is a shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, known as the god of learning. It is a popular destination for students from all over Japan who visit to pray for success in their exams. Upon entering the shrine grounds, visitors are greeted by a serene atmosphere with densely planted plum trees and a large pond. The plum trees are closely associated with Sugawara no Michizane, making the scenery especially beautiful in spring. The main hall of the shrine, built in 1591, boasts centuries of history and showcases the charm of traditional Japanese architecture.
One of the impressions I had while visiting Tenmangu is that it is not just a tourist spot but a 'sacred place' with special significance for the Japanese people. As a place imbued with Sugawara no Michizane's passion for learning, it attracts not only students who study hard but also people who come to make resolutions to achieve their goals. Especially on weekends or during exam seasons, the shrine grounds are packed with visitors, reflecting the strong faith people have and the power that Tenmangu holds.
Lastly, the various local delicacies available in the surrounding shopping street add to the enjoyment of visiting Tenmangu. The famous 'Umegae Mochi,' a sweet rice cake shaped like a plum blossom, is particularly delightful with its subtle sweetness. Walking along the paths while savoring this treat, one can't help but feel that Tenmangu and its surroundings are perfectly harmonious.

Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine
Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is the largest shrine in Fukuoka, Kyushu. Despite the scorching heat of 10 degrees that day, the park was still bustling with many local and foreign tourists. You will find a bridge spanning a beautiful lake. At the end of the street lined with various souvenir shops, the majestic building in front of you is the main shrine. This is also a popular spot for plum blossom viewing. If you visit in early spring, you will be amazed by the countless sweet plum blossoms. Remember to take a photo with the specially made cow monument, which is said to bring good luck.
Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is not just a place of worship. Various festivals and activities are held here throughout the year. You can also visit the shopping street to buy the locally famous sweet plum blossom cakes and get a strawberry ice pop, which is cold and chewy, making it a great treat to beat the heat. It only takes half an hour to drive back to Hakata from Dazaifu Station, making it very convenient.

A Family Trip to Dazaifu
I visited Dazaifu in Fukuoka with my daughter for a family trip. This place, where history and culture blend together, is perfect for enjoying with your family. First, we visited Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine to pray to the god of learning, which felt like a cleansing experience. On the approach to the shrine, we enjoyed delicious Umegae-mochi, which my daughter loved. At the Kyushu National Museum, we were able to learn about Japanese history through valuable exhibits from ancient times, making it both educational and enjoyable. The garden of Komyozenji Temple, rich in nature, allowed us to spend a peaceful time together while admiring the beautiful scenery.

[Fukuoka] Half-day tour to Dazaifu: Tenmangu Shrine, Inari Shrine, feel the mysterious atmosphere of the ancient shrine
# Sign up for August Hotel Sleeper #Temple #100 ways to travel
For the last day of our itinerary in Kyushu, we chose a half-day tour of Dazaifu in the suburbs of Fukuoka. In the morning we took the Nishitetsu Tenjin-Omuta Line to Nishitetsu Futukaichi Station, and then transferred to the Dazaifu Sightseeing Train to our destination. Before nine o'clock in the morning, the crowds on the Tenmangu shrine were relatively sparse, and the streets were full of shops selling mainly food and handicrafts. Numerous shops sell plum cakes, which are said to be a specialty of the area. When I first saw the term, I thought the cakes were stuffed with plum filling. I saw that the machine was producing continuously, and the human cages were purchased without interruption.
On the way, we passed the Starbucks store designed by the famous architect Kengo Kuma. It uses a large number of staggered wooden strips. At first glance, it looks like chopsticks holding chopsticks, achieving a visual extension effect. The sacred cow statue at the entrance of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. Tenmangu Shrine worships Sugawara Michizane. Sugawara's zodiac sign is an ox, so this bronze statue was erected. The horns and nose of the cow are touched by believers and turned into gold.
Michizane Sugawara was a scholar active in the Heian period (around the end of the Tang Dynasty). He was worshiped by two right ministers and was revered as the God of Learning by the Japanese. Later, he was killed by the Fujiwara clan, the emperor's relative, and was demoted to this place from Kyoto for 2 years. Then he died in depression. The Tenmangu Shrine built on Sugawara's tomb is now a famous tourist attraction, with millions of people visiting it every year. Especially during the examination period, candidates from all over the country come to pray for passing the examination.
In the back mountain of Tenmangu Shrine, there is a mountain trail away from the hustle and bustle, leading to Tenkai Inari Shrine. The vermilion torii gate is extremely conspicuous. Inari God is in charge of grains in Japanese folk beliefs. Believers who have their wishes fulfilled will dedicate red torii gates to Inari God to fulfill their wishes. It is the headquarters of the old Kyoto: Fushimi Inari Shrine is famous for its thousand torii gates.
If you don’t know the story of Inari Shrine, you might think it is a shrine worshiping the fox god. It turns out that the fox is the messenger of the god Inari because it can repel rats and protect the harvested crops. The fox ema is left blank for tourists to add to it. Put on the expression. The walk from Tenmangu Shrine to the shrine has a feeling of emptiness, because the number of people visiting on both sides is completely disproportionate. I wouldn't be surprised if a fox suddenly ran out while walking.

As you enter the shrine, the serene atmosphere and beautiful natural scenery blend together to give a peaceful feeling. Shrine and shop?
My visit to Dazaifu was a delightful blend of history, culture, and shopping. The highlight was Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, dedicated to the deity of learning. The shrine's intricate architecture and beautiful plum blossom gardens left me in awe. Strolling through the serene grounds, I felt a deep sense of tranquility and reverence.
I also enjoyed exploring the shopping street leading to the shrine, which was lined with charming shops and cafes. I couldn't resist trying umegae mochi, a delicious sweet rice cake filled with red bean paste, freshly made right before my eyes. The local boutiques offered unique souvenirs and traditional crafts, making the shopping experience just as memorable as the cultural sights.
Dazaifu's combination of historical significance, peaceful atmosphere, and vibrant shopping scene made my visit truly special.

Had a great time in fukuoka and visited the Dazaifu Tenmangu and it was such a beautiful place to visit. You can go by train and it takes about an hour. Once you arrive there are stores outside the temple so you can visit some local restaurants and buy some of their souvenirs as memories! I would recommend bringing some coins so that you can make some wishes by throwing the coin into the flowers :)

Making a Wish at Dazaifu
As a mere tourist who came to Fukuoka, besides indulging in food, it's only proper to visit the famous Dazaifu!
Right next to Dazaifu Station, there are several eateries, among which the most well-known to Hong Kong people is probably Ichiran Ramen. This branch is unique in all of Japan for its 'passing' ramen, served in a pentagonal bowl with chopsticks, symbolizing success in exams; the noodles are also twice as long as those at other branches, wishing happiness to the diner.
Walking along the Omotesando, both sides are lined with souvenir and snack shops, where many gifts for friends/colleagues are bought.
The most famous snack here, undoubtedly, is the Umeboshi Mochi. I didn't count carefully, but I heard there are over thirty shops selling this treat.
Being lazy, I didn't do my homework beforehand and didn't know which shop was the most famous. At first glance, there doesn't seem to be much difference, so I just went with my gut and bought two from 'Teradaya'. The outer layer is toasted to a slight fragrance, with a soft and chewy rice skin, and the inside is filled with hot red bean paste. To be honest, I'm not very good at appreciating it.
The attractions include Shinji Bridge and the Main Hall, etc. The pond in the garden is heart-shaped, hence the name Shinji Bridge. It is said that walking over the bridge purifies the body and soul, I hope so~
After visiting, one must check in at Dazaifu's Starbucks, with its crisscrossing wooden design, said to be the most beautiful Starbucks in Japan.
Of course, most temples have a place for people to hang their wishes, and this place is no exception. I sincerely hope everyone's wishes come true.

In addition, I discovered many unique shops on the shopping street. Among them, I particularly liked a store specializing in Japanese kimonos. The shop owner enthusiastically introduced me to the history and wearing methods of kimonos and even let me try on a beautiful kimono. Wearing this traditional attire, I felt as if I had traveled through time, experiencing the charm of ancient Japanese culture.

The early summer garden
FUKUOKA Taizifu has a history of 1100 years, where Sugawara no Michizane, known in Japan as the 'God of Learning' and the 'God of Calligraphy'; the golden bull at the entrance shines brightly from being touched, bestowing wisdom; ancient trees reach for the sky within the garden, with small bridges over flowing water, koi fish swimming gracefully, the spring's Kyokusui-no-en (Poem Composing Party by a Winding Stream), and the autumn's Shinko-sai (Grand Festival).
The garden landscape is also quite distinctive, with reflections of ancient trees and small bridges, hydrangeas in early summer, and purple irises in the water, all set against the blue sky for an exceptionally leisurely atmosphere.
Deep within the garden, there is also a ⛩️ nestled in the mountains, a children's playground, and the Kyushu National Museum, all worth exploring.
The streets around the attraction are lined with distinctive shops, with handmade plum cakes and karasumi (dried mullet roe) as well as Starbucks being the most popular.

complex of shrines that are decorated
The complex is beautiful because there are purple plum trees blooming and really makes it fun to walk through. It is free to enter. It is on the route of the Sky Hop-on-Hop-off bus, which you can catch at the Kyoto Train station (front area)
Go there in the 25th of the month when there is a huge flea/craft/fabric market all around the temple. Good finds at low price, also high prices for unique things, good local food, etc. The temple itself is beautiful. Monkey show is quite good

Dazaifu - A Journey Through Time in an Ancient City
Dazaifu, the name itself is like a long ancient poem, carrying the sediment of years and the echoes of history. As I wander through this ancient city in Kyushu, it feels as if I can travel back to its glorious past. The approach to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is busy and brimming with life, with a myriad of small shops offering everything from traditional Japanese confections to various handicrafts, each imbued with the artisan's care and story.
Museums are treasure troves of history. The Kyushu National Museum is not just a place for collecting artifacts; it's a crossroads of history and modernity, with a rich collection and exquisite exhibitions that provide a feast for both the eyes and knowledge. Especially those exhibits that showcase the ancient exchanges between Japan and other Asian countries, they deepen my understanding and appreciation of the region's historical culture.
Here, I seem to converse with every thread of history, and with every step, I can feel the breath of a thousand years. Walking here, pausing there, each step is suffused with the essence of history, as if time slows down in this place. 📚🌸

UNESCO Heritage Temple @ Fukuoka
One of the most famous temples in Kyushu, Japan, housing the god of learning Tenman-Tenjin in Japanese Taoist mythology. Was fortunate to catch the plum trees blossom, and it was a really tranquil and majestic place to visit! Highly recommend HKers to visit the shrine to experience what the difference is between HK's buddhism-based shrines and Japanese Taoism.
