Fort Kochi (Fort Kochi) is a waterfront area in the western part of the city of Kochi, Kerala state, India, adjacent to Mattancherry. Before colonial times, Cochin was just a fishing village. In 1503, because Alfonso de Albuquerque helped the native king defeat Calicut, the native king gifted the waterfront area of what is now Fort Kochi to the Portuguese to protect their commercial interests. The Portuguese established settlements behind the fort. They also built a wooden church, which was rebuilt as a permanent building in 1516, today known as St. Francis Xavier. Portugal owned Fort Cochin for 160 years. The Dutch captured Fort Cochin from the Portuguese in 1683, destroying many Portuguese institutions, especially Catholic monasteries. The Netherlands owned Fort Cochin for 112 years until Britain defeated the Netherlands in 1795. Foreign control of Fort Kochi ended with Indian independence in 1947. The area is a mixture of old Portuguese, Dutch and British colonial houses.
