It was originally built as a wooden castle in the 13th century before being replaced by stone castles in later years. The castle and hill is named after Gediminas, a Latvian king who is renowned in folklore. The castle tower is so important and iconic it used to feature on the former Latvian currency! Entry costs five euros for adults and a visit is highly recommended.

#JulyDestinations2025 From Riga Central Station, Latvia, we took the Flixbus to Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, a 4.45-hour drive. We stayed at Bali House, a guesthouse on T. Vrublevskio g. 4. The location was excellent, with the cathedral and the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania right outside. The guesthouse was clean and tidy, and it was on the street but not too noisy. Our itinerary for Lithuania took two days: Day 1 Lithuanian National Theatre (where you can take photos of the three golden men) Catherine Square Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania (we recommend buying full tickets; all four halls are very interesting, and the third and fourth halls usually feature European art exhibitions) Gediminas Tower (you can hike or take the cable car 🚡) Three Crosses Bernardine Garden St. Anne's Church Church Republic on the other side of the strait (you can go early to browse the shops. If you're looking for a stamp, see Figure 3️⃣ for a stamp upon entering. You can also mail a postcard.) Day 2 Presidential Palace Pedestrian Street: Stiklių g. Vilnius City Hall Gate of Dawn 🎫Lithuanian Art Museum Old Town Store 🎫MO Museum (Highly recommended. They've recently had a game exhibition on the second floor, and an art exhibition on the third floor.) 🍽️Must-mentary meal: Katpėdėlė Restaurant serves local Lithuanian cuisine. Try the pink broth (cold salty soup), potato dumplings (potatoes wrapped with meat filling and fried in oil), and fried breadsticks with mushroom sauce. This restaurant was taken to by a local, so it's a good reference for exploring Lithuanian cuisine. Figure 2️⃣NAMO Asian Fusion: Perfect for a quick meal. Try the Indian food; it's quite good! KFC? Honestly, there's no KFC in Finland, and I was craving fried chicken, so all my meals were fried chicken, hahaha! (If you're stuck for what to eat, try Georgian food; it's always a good idea!)

📅 Itinerary Day 1: Drive to Trakai and visit the castle on the lake, then make your way to Vilnius and arrive at your hotel. Day2: Visit Gediminas Tower (funicular wasn’t open when I went but the walk up wasn’t too bad if you’re fit). In this area you can also visit the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania and Vilnius Cathedral. Day3: Užupis Republic and Old Town (Gate of Dawn). Make sure you stop in an try some potato dumplings and beetroot soup at either Etno Dvaras or Bernelių Užeiga. Wow Vilnius has shocked me, prior to my visit I haven’t done much research on what to do in Vilnius as it was a spontaneous trip. Not expecting much as I’ve never really heard of anyone travelling here but wow have u been surprised. My hotel was right next to the train station which is so convenient especially when getting to the Old Town. The Old Town itself is absolutely beautiful full of history and incredible architecture. Definitely walkable as I managed to get through the entire Old Town and the Gediminas Castle Tower in about 3/4 hours. Once you cross the Neris River it honestly feels like you’ve entered an entire new city with skateparks, basketball courts and beach volleyball courts everywhere. I’d highly recommend renting an electric scooter to roam around this part of the city as they’re absolutely everywhere as well as designated bike/scooter lanes making it even easier to travel around.
