#TravelMoon ✨️Gongsanseong✨️ is a mountain fortress built during the Baekje period. It was called Ungjinseong during the Baekje period, and became Gongsanseong after the Goryeo period. It was built to protect Gongju, the capital city for 64 years under 5 generations until the capital was moved from Hansanseong to Ungjin in 475 (1st year of King Munju’s reign), and then to Buyeo in 538 (16th year of King Seong’s reign). It was the central mountain fortress at the time. It is a valley-style mountain fortress that surrounds the peak of Gongsan (公山), which is 110m above sea level, to the western peak, and the perimeter of the fortress is 2,450m. It is about 800m east to west and about 400m north to south in terms of plan, and stone walls remain on all sides. If you go up to Gongjusanseong Fortress located in Gongju, Chungcheongnam-do and look down, you can see the city of Gongju:) You can park in the parking lot and walk to the pavilion for 30 minutes, and you can find a place where you can take a picture of your life with Gongju Bridge in the middle. We are a bunch of friends from various nationalities. We discovered this place almost by accident. We were on our way back to our homes when we saw this beautiful fortress standing tall with a mesmerizing view on a river bank. We immediately stopped and went inside. Thankfully, it was a good decision. Situated on a river bank with a relative height, the fortress offers a beautiful view all around when atop. Clean and green environment is so soothing and calm that one is tempted to spend more time here than can originally thought to spare. Stoned-wall structure is typical of a fortresses anywhere in the world. Yet being located right in the middle of a city grants a rather unique identity to Gongsanseong Fortress.

Walking along the fortress walls, I was surrounded by blooming cherry trees and panoramic views of the city and river below. The petals softly floating against the backdrop of ancient stone structures created a scene that felt right out of a drama. I especially loved the peacefulness of the inner courtyard, where you can sit under the trees and soak in the spring air. This spot offers a wonderful mix of culture, history, and nature. It’s calm, scenic, and full of charm.

I thought I should go to Gongju for a day trip and take a walk around Gongsanseong Fortress and heal myself.. After burning calories for an hour at Gongsanseong Fortress, I went to the bakery Bammaeul right in front of me and bought fomo to refill my stomach...ㅎ (While waiting, I couldn't resist buying chestnut injeolmi at the store next door, so I bought some more, and almost all of the bread cost was 60,000 won) I stopped by the market on the way and bought some if they were open, but Bokja Tteok House and Dangol Tongdak were both open??! What should I do? I have to buy them all;;ㅎ When I come back to Gongju, I have to go eat Gimpitang, which is a must-eat. Of course, if there are 3 people, I should have a mini, but I ate a 4-person portion!! And when I got home, I ate a ton of chestnut food, whole chicken, and chestnut makgeolli,,, I'll just be a pig princess...🐷❕

This is Gongsanseong Fortress in Gongju-si, Chungcheongnam-do, Republic of Korea. It served as the royal castle of Ungjin Baekje from 475, when Baekje moved its capital to Gongju, until King Seong moved the capital to Buyeo in 538. It is connected to Gongju-si to the south, and borders the Geumgang River to the north. Most of the mountainous area, except for the southeast, has a steep slope, creating a natural fortress-like terrain with a folding screen. Important facilities, including the royal palace, were placed inside. These relics, which functioned as royal castles by installing the royal palace inside the mountain fortress, are evaluated as characteristic royal castle relics of Baekje.
