Located in the center of Seoul, Gwanghwamun is the main gate building of Gyeongbokgung Palace in the Joseon Dynasty. This stone and wood structure tower adopts the traditional hip roof, and the blue tiles with flying eaves and the vermilion beams and columns form a distinct visual feature. As the starting point of the ancient royal palace complex, a straight royal road extends behind the gate tower, connecting the main palace complex with the city axis. The existing building is a restored version, retaining the original three-arch gate shape, and a Chinese plaque is hung above the gate. The gatekeeper changing of guard ceremony held on a regular basis every day reproduces the traditional costumes and ceremonial process, attracting tourists to stop and watch. The area is adjacent to office areas and commercial buildings. The subway station exit leads directly to the west side of the square, and many bus lines stop at the surrounding intersections. Tourists often use this place as the starting point to explore the Bukchon Hanok Village and the Samcheong-dong Cultural District. The wide stone slab trail in front of the gate tower is suitable for taking panoramic photos and taking a short break.
