You might even recognize parts of it from Pride and Prejudice (yes, it was Pemberley in the 1995 BBC adaptation!). But what I loved most wasn’t just the house — it was the landscape. I spent the afternoon walking through ancient woodland and open moors, where red deer roam freely. Climbing up to The Cage, a former hunting lodge, rewarded me with breathtaking panoramic views stretching across Manchester to the Peak District. It was the perfect picnic spot. Best time to visit? Spring through early autumn is ideal, especially late April to June when the rhododendrons bloom and the deer are most active. Each room has staff who will be friendly and proactive in introducing the history and characteristics of the place. After touring the mansion and gardens, walk to The Cage on the top of the hill, once used as an ancient hunting lodge, lookout, and prison. The children ran along to the top of the mountain and enjoyed the scenery around them.
