We stayed at Kainuoli Homestay 🏠, which we highly recommend for its comfort and lovely Tajik hosts. --- 🏯 Stone City: 2,500 Years of History The ancient Stone City Scenic Area is the main attraction in Tashkurgan — a fortress full of legends, ruins, and unforgettable views 🔥. 🏞️ At 3,112m above sea level and covering 10,700 m², Stone City is one of the Top 3 ancient stone cities in China 🇨🇳. It includes: 🧱 City walls & gates 🕌 Temple ruins 🛖 Residential remains Over the centuries, this place had many names: 📜 Puli Kingdom (Han Dynasty) ⚔️ Congling Shouzhuo (Tang Dynasty) 🗺️ Sarikol (13th century) 🏛️ Puli Ting (Qing Dynasty) Built from stone, mud, and tree branches, the inner city still shows signs of towers, carved wardrobes, chimney ducts, and a northeast gate. The outer city housed officials, temples, and residences. Even today, traces of its grandeur remain visible 🌬️. It’s incredible to imagine how, in such a harsh environment, ancient Tajiks built something so vast and elegant. 💪👏 🪧 In 1990, it became a protected heritage site in Xinjiang, and in 2001, a National Key Cultural Relic 🏛️. 🎫 Entrance: 40 CNY (foreigner). Officially you need to buy tickets in town, but we managed to get ours directly at the entrance with a little insistence 😉 🎟️ The ticket includes access to a small museum full of historical relics and Tajik cultural displays. 🌄 From the top of the fortress walls, the view of the majestic Mount Muztagh Ata (7,546 m) is absolutely breathtaking! 😍✨ --- 🍽️ Where to Eat On your way back to town, stop at 农章小锅抓饭 (Nongzhang Xiaoguo Zhuafan) for a delicious local meal 😋. Their plov (抓饭) is rich and flavorful 🍚, and they also serve tasty home-style Tajik and Uyghur dishes 🍢🥗. --- 🚶♀️ Around Town In the center of Tashkurgan, you’ll find clear traces of Tajik culture: murals, traditional houses, and friendly locals in traditional dress 🧕🎨. There’s also a museum across from the eagle statue roundabout 🦅, though it's currently closed — the exhibits have been moved to the Stone City exhibition hall. Take time to wander the streets, soak in the atmosphere, and enjoy the unique crossroads of cultures this place represents 🌍❤️.
