The Perfume River adds a touch of magic, especially at sunset. Spring’s cooler temps make exploring way more comfortable, and the light drizzle now and then just adds to the charm. Street vendors pop up with hot snacks, students cycle past in uniforms, and there’s always a hidden courtyard waiting to be discovered. Stop by little cafés for Vietnamese coffee, chat with locals, and just vibe. Hue isn’t about rushing, it’s about slowing down and soaking it all in. Pure peace, wrapped in culture.

Located about a two-hour drive from Da Nang, Hue is a city worth exploring at a leisurely pace to fully enjoy its sights and cuisine, rather than just a quick day trip. The city is home to the Imperial City, Thien Mu Pagoda, Khai Dinh Tomb, and five other structures that are collectively recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites under the "Complex of Hue Monuments." The Perfume River flows between the new and old quarters of the city. As you enter the old quarter, you'll immediately come across the Imperial City of Hue. The Imperial City itself is vast and offers plenty to see! If you have the time, spending half a day to thoroughly explore it is highly recommended. The architecture is a blend of Vietnamese and Chinese cultures, with ornate and dazzling decorations. The cannons, said to represent the five elements of Chinese philosophy—wood, fire, earth, metal, and water—are particularly impressive and were designed to protect the Imperial City. If you visit between May and June, you can also enjoy the lush lotus leaves and beautiful gardens. I visited in May, during the season of fresh greenery, and I still remember how rejuvenated I felt by the vibrant natural surroundings. However, even during this time of year, the weather can be quite hot. During the dry season, temperatures rise even higher, so I recommend bringing sunscreen, a hat, and a parasol for your sightseeing. After exploring the Imperial City, take a break at a nearby café famous for its "salt coffee." This unique coffee is said to have originated in Hue, and it's especially delightful after a long walk. Salt coffee features a layer of salted cream atop traditional Vietnamese coffee. While it is generally sweet, I, being a fan of bitter flavors, opted to add an extra shot of espresso. The balance of sweetness and saltiness is exquisite, making it an addictive treat! Later, we visited the Tomb of Minh Mang, which is surrounded by lush greenery and tranquil ponds, creating a picturesque and peaceful atmosphere. Visit early in the morning for cooler weather and fewer crowds.
