Stepping Back in Time at the Temple of Apollo in Naxos
#mytraveldiary The Temple of Apollo in Naxos, located in the South Aegean, is one of the island’s most iconic landmarks. Known as the Portara, this massive marble doorway stands proudly at the entrance of the harbor, welcoming visitors with a glimpse of ancient grandeur. Even though only the doorway remains, its presence is striking, especially when the sun sets behind it and the sky fills with warm colors.
Walking up to the site is easy, and once there, you get sweeping views of the sea and the charming town below. The atmosphere is both peaceful and inspiring, as if the ruins still hold the spirit of Greek mythology. It is a simple yet unforgettable spot that captures the timeless beauty of Naxos.

Chasing Golden Hours at the Temple of Apollo 🌅🪨
The Temple of Apollo (Portara) on Naxos is a dream for sunset lovers and history buffs, blending ancient grandeur with the island’s dazzling coastal vibes. The iconic marble doorway stands proudly at the tip of a causeway, offering unbeatable views over the twinkling Aegean Sea—perfect for those "sun kissing ruins" shots!
🧭 Recommended Itinerary:
Stroll up in late afternoon to secure a good spot before the crowds gather for sunset. The walkway is rocky, so wearing sturdy shoes is a must (you’ll thank yourself—heels and flip-flops won’t make it!). Find your angle as the light shifts: the classic insta-worthy shot is framed right through the Portara with the sun sinking behind.
🌟 Must-Do Activities:
- Stand beneath the ancient Portara for that awe-struck feeling.
- Wander the causeway for panoramic snaps of Naxos Town and the sea.
- Time your visit so you can linger and watch the pastel sky transform during golden hour.
📸 Top Photo Spots:
Right at the base of the Portara, looking back towards town, or capture the doorway’s silhouette against the glowing sunset. Trust me, the colors pop best with the sea in the background.
💡 Visiting Tips:
Arrive at least 30 minutes before sunset for the best viewing and photos. There's no entrance fee—just walk up! Bring water, as there’s little shade and no food stalls at the site.
⚠️ Precautions:
The causeway and temple site are uneven and can be slippery, especially after rain or dew. Keep a close eye on footing and secure loose belongings as the wind can pick up.

Naxos: Why you should come here
As a couple in our 30’s, we’re well past our party days. Escaping to Naxos island was the perfect way to experience everything a Greek island has to offer without the party island prices and crowds.
Here are three reasons you should travel to Naxos:
1. The sunsets.
Every day is different, and there are so many view points - bars/restaurants, the beach, the top of the Temple of Apollo - to watch the sunset from.
2. The food.
Many naxian’s live on the island, which means a lot of the restaurants are family run with a long history to perfect their recipes. Special mention to Elizabeth’s Garden; we ate here three meals in a row, it was that good!
3. The people
Naxian’s are naturally friendly people. They are eager to help and very lovely to chat with. Service at hotels, restaurants and bars were always faultless.
I highly recommend planning a visit to Naxos next time you go to the Greek islands - two to four days to see everything with an extra day to rest and enjoy the various beaches.
