Seoul Travel: Bogwangsa, a hidden temple in Ui-dong, Gangbuk
#SeoulTravel
✨️Bogwangsa✨️(普光寺) is a temple affiliated with the Seonhakwon Foundation located at Samgaksan, Ui-dong, Gangbuk-gu, Seoul. Bogwangsa was founded in 1788 (12th year of King Jeongjo’s reign) by Wondam, who practiced asceticism at Geumgangsan, and founded Shinwonsa. After that, it was destroyed by the Korean War, and only some buildings remained, barely keeping the Buddhist lights alive. Then, in 1979, Namsandang (南山堂) monk Jeongil (正日) established a missionary foundation and began Buddhist services here, and changed the temple’s name to Bogwangsa in November 1980. Since then, the monk has cultivated the temple to become what it is today, and regularly holds Mahayana Sutra Forest Dharma ceremonies and Zen meditation ceremonies to spread the Buddha’s teachings and Zen dharma to people, helping them find the right path for themselves. As a result, Bogwangsa has become a true missionary temple, just as the monk had hoped. Monk Jeongil, who devoted his soul to public education, passed away in 2004 after suffering from exhaustion. Since then, the public of Bogwangsa Temple has continued the monk's will in a more progressive manner.
