The Unirii Square is the main square of Trieste and the largest seaside square in Europe. Surrounded by tall white buildings on three sides and facing the bay on the other side, it was once the main outlet for the Austro-Hungarian Empire, a once prosperous port city and a music and literature center, which gradually declined as it was merged into Italy.
