Yufuin is one of those towns that feel like they belong in a fairytale—quiet streets, cozy cafes, and a mountain backdrop that takes your breath away. Using my JR Kyushu Pass, I hopped on the train from Fukuoka and arrived in just a couple of hours. The ride itself was so scenic—rolling hills, rivers, and charming little stations along the way. 🏞️ Once in Yufuin, I strolled down Yunotsubo Kaido, tried local snacks, and found the cutest handmade souvenirs. The whole town is walkable, with surprises at every corner—from art museums to hot spring foot baths. 🥟👣 My favorite part? The view of Mount Yufu reflecting on Kinrinko Lake. It was calm, surreal, and totally unforgettable. 🌅 With the JR Pass, it’s easy and affordable to explore places like this. Yufuin truly feels like a gentle hug from nature. 🍃

We went in early June, during the rainy season. There weren't many people. It rained sometimes and stopped sometimes. During this time, we got to experience the bright green nature. #FukuokaConquest Day 1: After arriving at Fukuoka Airport from Narita, we took a stroll through Ohori Park to refresh ourselves. Afterwards, we visited Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine and enjoyed Umegae Mochi. In the evening, we thoroughly enjoyed the Hakata specialty Mizutaki at Mizutaki Nagano in Gion. Day 2: We took a bus tour from Hakata Station and visited Beppu's Kamado Jigoku and Umi Jigoku. In Yufuin, we saw the magnificent view of Ko-Fujiyama, then strolled through the hot spring town. On the way back, we also stopped by Kaeru-dera (Nyoirin-ji Temple), and in the evening, we enjoyed the local gourmet food of Motsunabe and Ippon-gyoza in Hakata. Day 3: We took another bus tour to Shimonoseki. We cruised the Kanmon Straits and had a seafood lunch at Karato Market. After a spectacular drive across the Tsunoshima Bridge, we finally went to the photogenic Motonosumi Shrine. The mystical view of the 123 red torii gates lined up is a must-see. Day 4: Head towards Takachiho, Kumamoto. First, walk through the fantastical forest of Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine and enter the world of myth at Ama-no-Iwato Shrine. The trip concludes with a visit to the beautiful valley of Takachiho Gorge. Exploring Kyushu by road was one of the best decisions we made for this trip. Starting from Fukuoka, we picked up our rental car and hit the road. Fukuoka welcomed us with its vibrant city life, delicious street food, and warm hospitality. It was the perfect gateway to start our journey. From there, we drove to Beppu, famous for its steaming hot springs and unique "hells." It felt like stepping into another world, with bubbling mud pools and colorful thermal ponds. Relaxing in a private onsen surrounded by nature was a highlight of our stay. Next stop: Nagasaki. A city with a complex history and deep emotional resonance. We visited the Peace Park, the Atomic Bomb Museum. Despite its past, Nagasaki radiates hope and resilience, and we left with a deeper appreciation of its cultural richness. We then made our way to Kumamoto, where we were blown away by the grandeur of Kumamoto Castle. Even after the earthquake damage, the castle remains majestic and powerful. Driving through the countryside around Aso was a dream. rolling hills, volcanic landscapes, and the kind of scenery that makes you stop and soak it all in. What made this trip truly special was the freedom of the road, stopping whenever we wanted, discovering local cafes, coastal views, and meeting kind-hearted locals along the way. The roads in Kyushu are well-maintained, and the drive itself was smooth and enjoyable. This road trip gave us a taste of Kyushu’s soul, its nature, history, food, and people. A pizza restaurant located 1 minute by car from Yufuin Interchange [Kuwa no Oka] Here you can eat excellent pizza with a spectacular view! It was so delicious that I finished it in seconds! The pizza dough was thin, which was just how I like it! The spare ribs baked in the stone oven were also meaty and the best! 🕰️Business hours: 11:00-20:00 (10:30- on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays) ⚠️It gets very crowded on Saturdays and Sundays, so we recommend arriving 1-30 minutes before opening. There is a list in front of the store, so when you arrive, you write your name on it and wait for your turn. ⚠️Reservations are only accepted at dinner time. Lunch is not available You can order using a tablet with photos, so you can take your time thinking about what you want to eat! Despite the large number of customers, the food is served quickly and you can eat without having to wait! Stayed at Grand Mercure Beppu. The hotel is quite nice, with complimentary drinks time, overwhelming breakfast, onzen and stunning sunrise view ! A short 30 mins drive from hotel to Yafu art village was a more than pleasant and relaxing time. Beautiful scenery and well set eateries and shopping ( despite a bit touristy but still enjoyable) . Wish we could have more time in Oita. #oita

yufuin is a lovely city that you must visit if you come to Fukuoka. It took about three hours in total + another hour and a half to queue for roast beef 😂 The lake is really beautiful and there is fog. You can bring children and the elderly because it is not steep at all. Tip ×Bring an umbrella or raincoat. The weather goes up and down. ××There are quite a few people staying overnight in Yufuin. I heard Japanese people say that it is famous for its onsen. ×××You can come by train and bus. I recommend booking in advance. 2-3 days in advance is better if you book more because it fills up quickly. Book both the outbound and return trips. There is a place to leave your luggage in front of the station, but it seems like you have to fight for it. Fight with Chinese and Koreans. ××××The grilled matsutake mushroom shop is delicious. The roast beef rice is really amazing. It was worth waiting in line for an hour and a half.
