It is China's first national forest park and a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, often considered the real-life version of the world in Avatar. The towering peaks come in various shapes, surrounded by mist, creating a fairy-tale-like scenery. With its breathtaking beauty, Zhangjiajie is a must-visit destination for travelers and photography enthusiasts alike.

This was my first time visiting Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. I did some research beforehand, but for the rest, I relied on trial and error to find my way around. I entered the park at 7:30 am and finished visiting all the attractions by 5 pm, and it was on a Sunday, when there were many visitors. But I managed to take a day trip with zero lines and zero slopes! I've put the itinerary in picture one, and here's a detailed explanation: 1⃣ Enter through the Wulingyuan East Gate. At this time, the large tour groups will all be taking the eco-bus to the Bailong Elevator. I chose to take the eco-bus to the Tianzi Mountain cable car. 2⃣ No lines going up the Tianzi Mountain cable car, and it only takes ten minutes to get to Tianzi Mountain 3⃣ The eco-bus on the mountain will take you to Helong Park in Tianzi Mountain 4⃣ After visiting Helong Park and Tianzi Pavilion, take the eco-bus to Yangjiajie. The whole journey takes about 30 minutes. The winding mountain roads made me, someone who doesn't usually get carsick, feel a little nauseous. 5⃣ After getting off at Yangjiajie, avoid the crowds going to Yuanjiajie and take the Yangjiajie cable car down the mountain 6⃣ The mountain views on both sides of the Yangjiajie cable car are worth seeing. After getting off, an eco-bus will take you to Longfeng Temple 7⃣ After getting off, walk about 300m along the forest trail to the Huangshizhai cable car 8⃣ Huangshizhai is at the top of the cable car. The scenery here is beautiful, and I especially recommend taking the outer loop line counterclockwise. After 1 to 2 hours of sightseeing, take the cable car back down the mountain 9⃣ After coming down from Huangshizhai, take the eco-bus to the South Gate 🔟 If you're tired at this point, you can exit the park from the South Gate. If you still have energy, you can continue hiking the 5.5 km of the Golden Whip Stream. The scenery along the way is unique, and the whole journey, including breaks, will take about 2 to 2.5 hours, eventually reaching Water-Surrounded Gate 1⃣1⃣ Take the eco-bus from Water-Surrounded Gate to the Bailong Elevator 1⃣2⃣ When I got to the Bailong Elevator, it was 3:30 pm. At this time, there was no one waiting to go up the mountain. On the opposite side, there was a bustling crowd coming down the elevator. So, I had the entire glass window of the elevator to myself for the whole 60-second ride. To be honest, both the scenery and the ride experience were very average. If I had to wait in line for more than an hour, I would have felt like a total sucker. 1⃣3⃣ After taking the elevator up the mountain, you can take an almost empty eco-bus to Yuanjiajie. You'll find that everyone on the other side is taking pictures of the eco-bus going in the opposite direction and the people going down the Bailong Elevator. At this point, a sense of superiority arises spontaneously. 1⃣4⃣ The return journey from Yangjiajie is the same route as in the morning, just going back. Finally, I arrived at the Tianzi Mountain cable car at 5 pm to go down the mountain. At this time, there was almost no one on the cable car going down the mountain, so I did something very boring: I rode this cable car back and forth three times. I was the only one in the cable car, so I could take pictures and videos as I pleased. The jagged peaks on both sides of this cable car are still worth seeing. I left the park at 6 pm, bought a cup of Heytea at the entrance, and sat down to drink it slowly. Overall, the trip was very relaxing, because I was traveling during off-peak hours, so I didn't need to rush and could rest on the spot whenever I was tired. Day 1: head to the south gate and explore the beautiful ravine walk. There are several great photo spots and activities to do along the river. One of my favorite spots was where they were playing the Monkey King series in the same location that is was filmed. You should also try to climb up the village only if you’re ready for a very difficult walk up 3km of stairs! At night head to the downtown area and check out the ‘72 Strange Buildings’ area for some live shows, street food, and an incredible view of this unique structure. During the day it is only 20RMB but the most spectacular light shows and performances are at night so spend the 88RMB after 16:30 instead. Day 2: head to the East gate and take the bailing elevator up. Follow the crowds until you get to Yuangjiajie and the cable cars. Everywhere is gorgeous around you and there are so many great snacks like bbq meat sticks and stinky tofu! You can’t go wrong with any plan you make really because everything here is so beautiful. You’ll be paying the same price for 1 day or 4 days at the park which is around 250RMB but the price for each attraction (lift, cable cars, etc ranges from 100-200RMB) be prepared to spend about 700RMB if you’d like to do most of the attractions and the price can go up from there. There are monkeys everywhere which was one of my favorite parts about this place, they’re friendly, but don’t provoke them or feed them things you shouldn’t! To be honest, I was initially drawn to Zhangjiajie by the enchanting rime when planning my trip at home. 😍 However, upon arrival, I realized that there was little rime left on the mountain. 😭 But 🤩, visiting Zhangjiajie in the off-season was surprisingly delightful! Fewer people and beautiful scenery were unexpected rewards! Especially for us southerners, playing in the snow at Qixing Mountain Ski Resort was a dream come true. Now, I want to share our travel itinerary with you. If you want to visit Zhangjiajie in winter to avoid the peak season, make sure to plan your trip soon! 1️⃣ Travel Itinerary 🚗: For those who find the high-speed train too time-consuming, you can choose to travel by ✈️ plane. Since we joined a tour group in advance, someone picked us up at the airport and took us to the hotel. We didn't have to worry about transportation and accommodation in the city, and we easily checked in with the group. After tasting the famous local dish, Sanxia Guo, we returned to the hotel to rest and prepare for the next day's trip to Tianmen Mountain! 🌄 Tianmen Mountain You can complete the tour in just one day, with three different ways to experience the same route: A: Take the large cable car up the mountain + the express cable car down the mountain. This option is suitable for those who don't want to walk too much. B: Take the express cable car up the mountain + the large cable car down the mountain. If you enjoy the feeling of climbing, you can choose this route. C: Use the express cable car for both directions. This option is suitable for those who want to challenge themselves and don't want to miss any beautiful scenery. 🌟 Personal Recommendation: I personally prefer option A because going downhill is much easier than going uphill, allowing you to enjoy the scenery more leisurely. 🌳 Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is recommended to be visited over two days, otherwise, it may be tiring and difficult to see everything. - Day 1: Enter from the East Gate → Bailong Elevator → Yuanjiajie → Yangjiajie → Tianzi Mountain → Tianzi Mountain Cable Car → Return to the East Gate - Day 2: Depart from the East Gate again → Ten-mile Gallery → Golden Whip Stream → Huangshi Village → Oxygen Bar Square → Exit from the South Gate 🎿 Qixing Mountain Ski Resort was a hidden gem we discovered after arriving! We didn't have high hopes for seeing snow, but we were pleasantly surprised to find a ski resort here. You can reach the ski resort entrance directly via the cable car from the foot of the mountain. It's recommended to go skiing early to avoid crowds. We arrived at around 8 am and played for over two hours before other tourists started arriving. It felt like we had the place to ourselves! 📌 Tips: 1️⃣ When taking the Bailong Elevator, remember to stand at the front near the glass for the best view! 2️⃣ There are eco-friendly buses between each attraction. If you get carsick easily, remember to bring medication. 3️⃣ Be careful not to provoke the monkeys on the mountain to avoid getting scratched. ⚠️ If you're visiting specifically for the rime, be sure to check the weather forecast in advance and plan your time accordingly, or you may miss the best viewing period. 🎫 Tickets for the two main attractions need to be purchased in advance, and online booking is more convenient. I’ve been dreaming of visiting Zhangjiajie in Hunan for the past 5 years! I finally visited all the sites. Zhangjiajie National Park (pic 2 and 5) consists of a few area and it’s absolutely huge- you can easily spend a couple of days here especially if you want to explore the beautiful park- however as I was pressed for time I only spent a day here and mostly visited the Wulingyuan scenic area. However, my absolutely favourite has to be Tianmen Mountain- (pic 1,3,4) - truly, pictures can’t capture the beauty of this place. To get to the top, you take the cable car, which apparently is the "longest passenger cableway of high mountains in the world" - it ascends 1,279 m (4,196 ft)- I can only describe it as that your eyes are rewarded with magnificent views of blue skies (depending on the weather of course), luscious greenery and emerald coloured lakes as you are slowly transported up. When you reach the top, you feel as if you are truly on top of the world. Hi everyone (: Something i would have loved to know - You enter in Zhangjiajie city - The popular entrance of the national park is at wulingyuan. - The grand Canyon is about 30mins away from Wulingyuan - Tianmenshan is accessible through cable car at Zhangjiajie city -Carry your passport everywhere Here’s my itinerary: Arrival day Fly in or take a train in, we did a 6 hour bullet train from shenzhen. Take a didi to wulingyuan Check in to your hotel there Dinner and chill Day 1 Have breakfast nearby and enter the park Get on a bus to bailong lift (its the 4th stop) Take the lift up and take a bus to yuanjiajie scenic area. This is where the avatar mountains are Give yourself about 2 hours to walk the whole thing im just really slow but if you are done earlier you can take a bus to yangjiajie but since we didnt have time because the park closes at 5:30pm we decided to head straight to tianzi mountain Take a bus to tianzi mountain and after walking around take a cable car back down and the bus will take you straight to the exit from there its just a short walk back to the hotel. Day 2 We started off later today because we only had the golden whip stream hike planned so after breakfast we headed in but we saw the helicopter ride being recommend and for $98 for 5mins we thought why not and decided to take it hahaha After the heli ride we went back into the park and did the golden whip stream hike. Its about a 6km hike that takes you to the main entrance of the park. So just grab a bus for 10 yuan and it will take you back to wulingyuan and short walk to hotel again Day 3 Today we did the grand canyon. The route recommended is take a didi to the entrance, get on a bus inside the park that leads you to the actual park, go across the bridge, play the VR, take the zipline, slide down the glass slide, and do like a 3km hike to the exit. Thats exactly what we did and the tickets that the hotel helps you buy is all included so really its so worth. We also went to the romance park and watched the show and i tried searching online but it was too late ( usually you buy a day in advance) so i asked the hotel if they could get it for us and they came through. (Check out my previous post about which hotel i stayed in!) Day 4 After checking out take a didi back to the city and check into your hotel. We stayed at orange hotel which was across the road from the cable car that takes you up Our ticket was route A, cable car up, walk around and take the cable car halfway and come back by bus. The route we walked was the west to the east and climbed the stairs down. About a 4km hike around the whole thing Come back down and have dinner and thats the end of your trip! If your flight the next day is at night, definitely take a day trip to furong town, or if you have the energy after tianmen mountain check out the 72 strange buildings. The crowds at Tianmen Mountain were really scary the previous few days. I made a last-minute decision to go, and only managed to get a B Line ticket for the 9:00 am slot. A Line VIP tickets were sold out over a week ago, so I had no choice but to leave early to avoid the crowds. 7:40 am: Departed from the hotel and took a taxi to the Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park ticket gate🚗. Normally, B Line requires a shuttle bus from the A Line starting point, but a taxi is more time-saving. There was no traffic at this time, and I arrived at 8:00 am. 8:00 am: Started queuing for ticket inspection, which took half an hour. 8:30 am: Queued for the mountain cable car, starting from the entrance of the Tianmen Fox Fairy Theatre. After an hour, I boarded a large cable car that could hold 26 people. 9:30 am: Arrived at the cable car station and walked along the Speed Plank Road to the Tianmen Cave Square for a photo. As the weather was a bit cold, I was worried about my child catching a cold, so I bought a 32 yuan escalator ticket to go directly to the Tianmen Cave. The scenery along the way was beautiful and relaxing. 10:50 am: The tour guide went to draw a number for us. At that time, there was no need to draw a number and we could go directly. 11:05 am: Arrived at the entrance of the downhill cable car. Luckily, we were the last group to be able to queue without drawing a number. The entrance was then closed. Before 12:00 pm, I queued for the cable car. Each car needed to be filled with 8 people. Most of the queuing was indoors. I recommend that everyone purchase A Line VIP tickets in advance during peak season (available on Ctrip, 150 yuan per person) to reduce queuing time. When we went downhill, the A Line queue was already outside. I estimate that it would take at least 3-4 hours to get on the cable car. B Line is the opposite of A Line. During peak season, my principle is to only see the important attractions and not stay too long. Try to arrive at the downhill cable car station before 11:00 am, so that you can basically go directly without drawing a number. This time, I only watched the Charm of Xiangxi show. The Tianmen Fox Fairy live performance recommended by my friend will have to wait until next time. If you like seeing what nature can offer, you can try visiting the avatar mountain which is located in Zhangjiajie. Very convenient as there are buses/cable cars that will take you to the place. It's a very big place where you can do both hiking and relaxing at the same time while taking buses Food stalls are also found in almost every location so i swear you will never hungry. Prices may of course vary, so if you don't want to spend too much then you can also carry your own snacks. 1 day is not enough as the park is huge so at least 2 days should be spent or maybe 3 for this trip.
