Gain 3 Pounds in Two Days in Teochew‼ ️ Top 3 Beef Hotpots Where Locals Line Up 🐂 Who understands the joy of Teochew people! I had three beef hotpots in two days here, and these three online-famous restaurants truly lived up to their reputations~ Sharing my real-life check-in experiences! 1⃣ Guantang Rongxing Chenji Beef Hotpot 📍 No. 183 Chaofeng Road (right side of Mingde Garden main entrance) ✨ Must-order: Kway Teow with Beef Tendon Balls, Diaolongban, and Huazhi Location in the city is super convenient! The owner personally cuts the meat, so it's so fresh. The beef tendon balls are incredibly juicy, and I could have three plates of them dipped in shacha sauce! The stir-fried beef noodles are incredibly fragrant, so be sure to get there early or you'll be waiting in line! Tip: Besides beef hotpot, the raw marinated beef is also incredibly delicious! 😍 2⃣ Sheng Ji Guantang Beef (Xinyang Road Branch) 📍No. 3-5, Huashengyuan, Xinyang Road ✨Must-order: Marbled pork simmered for 8 seconds, and beef tripe dipped in Puning bean paste. This old-fashioned spot is a local favorite! The texture of the marbled pork is incredibly beautiful, melting like marshmallow in your mouth. The tripe is incredibly crispy, and the rice noodles with their secret shacha sauce are so fragrant you'll want to lick the plate! 3⃣ Guantang Brothers Beef Hotpot Restaurant (Guantang Main Branch) 📍In front of the Guantang Town Comprehensive Farmers' Market on Provincial Highway 335 ✨Must-order: Crispy breast and chopped celery on the handle. The main branch is truly amazing! Open until the wee hours, they serve the beef warm from fresh slaughter. The beef looks fatty but is actually crispy and not greasy. Finally, a bowl of beef bone soup is so refreshing I almost closed my eyes! I won't tell you I waited in line for two hours for this place 🥹 Tips: ▪️Chaozhou beef is cooked in a "three-rise, three-fall" style. ▪️Go at 10 AM or 4 PM for the freshest meat. #ChaozhouFood #BeefHotPotCeiling #Must-eatsTravelChaoshan #BiteofChaozhou #FoodieSpecialForces
Can you believe it? In a thousand-year-old ancient city, you can try 20 kinds of intangible cultural heritage snacks in a single day, capture breathtakingly beautiful photos in the heart of a red-walled temple, and—best of all—without having to detour! Today, we'll take you on a two-day immersive tour of Chaozhou. Eat from morning to night on Paifang Street, become a true master of ancient style at Kaiyuan Temple, and truly immerse yourself in the vibrant and ancient charm of Chaozhou! 🔴 Day 1: From Chaoshan Station to the heart of the ancient city, enjoy a delicious meal at Paifang Street. 10:00-10:30 Chaoshan Station: Don't miss it! The Ancient City Express takes you directly to this "foodie paradise." After arriving at Chaoshan Station, don't rush to hail a ride! The Chaozhou Ancient City Express runs right outside the station, taking you directly to the heart of the ancient city. Save on taxi fares and experience Chaozhou's transportation in advance. Tip: The express runs frequently, but during peak season, it's recommended to check the schedule in advance. Luggage-laden, you can immediately start your "shopping and dining" adventure—just think! 10:30 AM - 1:00 PM Paifang Street: Eat from the start to the end, and indulge in intangible cultural heritage snacks. Paifang Street is no ordinary commercial street. With 23 Ming and Qing dynasty archways lined up, the arcade architecture, a fusion of Chinese and Western styles, creates a retro masterpiece in every photo. But as a food blogger, I'm more interested in the local culinary scene: • Hu Rongquan Duck Noodles: The Chaozhou version of the "Hermès of Tangyuan." Black sesame and mung bean paste tossed in brown sugar water, the bite is glutinous and sweet without being greasy. Its reputation as an intangible cultural heritage snack is well-deserved! • Lao Bin Oyster Omelette: Pan-fried to order, the oysters are plump and the skin is crispy. Dip it in fish sauce for a delicious explosion of flavor. A local favorite since childhood! • Kaiyuansu Cakes: Located right in front of Kaiyuan Temple, these mung bean cakes have a thin crust, generous filling, and just the right amount of sweetness. Buy a few boxes as souvenirs, and your friends will praise your selection! Don't worry about not being able to finish your meal; every alleyway holds a hidden surprise. Take Jiadi Lane for example, where you might even stumble upon a couple taking wedding photos and share in their joyful celebrations. 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM Kaiyuan Temple: A "Chinese Style Blockbuster" Amidst Red Walls and Inlaid Porcelain After a satisfying meal, head to Kaiyuan Temple to digest your food. This ancient Tang Dynasty temple is packed with hidden gems: its red walls and green trees create a "Forbidden City" vibe in every photo. The colorful inlaid porcelain eaves, a Chaozhou intangible cultural heritage, bring flowers, birds, fish, and insects to life on the rooftops, seemingly poised to spring to life. Aside: The monks are friendly, and if you catch a Dharma assembly, you can experience the solemnity of Buddhist culture. Wear light-colored or period-inspired clothing and sit on the stone steps in front of the main hall to instantly capture the feeling of "peaceful years in a thousand-year-old temple"! 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM Xima Road + Jiadi Lane: A local's hidden gem for both food and culture After leaving Kaiyuan Temple, don't rush back to your B&B! Turn around and head to Xima Road for more down-to-earth snacks: • Lao Zheng Licorice Fruit: A variety of fruits tossed in licorice juice, a sweet and sour treat that's a perfect way to break the greasy feeling; • Abin Beef Hotpot: The essence of Chaozhou beef hotpot is freshness. Freshly cut beef is cooked in seconds and dipped in shacha sauce for a delicious, sizzling flavor! After dinner, head to Jiadi Lane. The Republican-era buildings here are beautifully preserved, with bluestone pavements and carved doors and windows. Find any corner to pose for photos, and you'll feel like you're on a journey through the Republic of China. 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM Guangji Bridge Light Show: The Millennium Romance of the "Eighteen Shuttle Boats" A must-see at Guangji Bridge in the evening! This "world's oldest retractable bridge" features a light show every evening at 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM (specific times vary by location). The lights outline the bridge, and the "Eighteen-Shuttle Boats" slowly move across the river, creating a sense of transport back in time. It's definitely worth the price of admission! Afterward, stroll along the riverside promenade, enjoying the gentle evening breeze and relieving the day's fatigue. 🔴 Day 2: Exploring the ancient city, integrating intangible cultural heritage with a slow-paced lifestyle. 9:00-11:00 AM Longhu Ancient Village: "A Living Chaoshan Ancient Village" Wake up early and head to Longhu Ancient Village, a microcosm of Chaoshan clan culture, with its harmoniously arranged bluestone pavements, ancestral halls, and private school buildings. Chat with a local elder and hear family stories from the village, like opening a "living textbook of Chaoshan history." Don't forget to try a bowl of Longhu Dungao (Dumped Cake), a soft and glutinous glutinous rice cake drizzled with syrup for a heartwarming sweetness. 12:00-1:30 PM Guantang Beef: "The Ceiling of Chaoshan Beef Hotpot" A must-try when returning to the city is Guantang Beef. Beef restaurants here are all based on a "slaughterhouse + hotpot restaurant" model, and the beef is so fresh it's practically dancing. We recommend ordering the diaolong (diaolong) or shiren (shouren) beef. Dip it in Puning bean paste after simmering for a truly tender and succulent experience. Only after enjoying it will you truly understand the essence of Chaoshan beef hotpot! 2:00-4:00 PM Chaozhou Intangible Cultural Heritage Experience: Make Your Own "Inlaid Porcelain Refrigerator Magnet" What's a trip to Chaozhou without experiencing intangible cultural heritage? Visit an inlaid porcelain studio (book online in advance) and learn the inlaid porcelain technique from an intangible cultural heritage inheritor. Then, make your own inlaid porcelain refrigerator magnet and take home a piece of Chaozhou's "colorful art." It's a lot of fun, and even clumsy hands can create a cute creation that's sure to get tons of comments on your social media! 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM Taiping Street: Souvenir Shopping & Retro Photography Finally, head to Taiping Street for souvenir shopping. Zaiyang Teahouse's Phoenix Dancong tea and Daluogu Beef Balls' vacuum-packed beef balls are both great souvenirs. You can also listen to a Teochew opera and enjoy a cup of Kung Fu tea at Zaiyang Teahouse, immersing you in the slow pace of life of Chaoshan people. 6:00 PM Return: Return home with a heart full of delicious food and stories to tell. Over the course of two days, you've sampled intangible cultural heritage snacks, taken stunning photos in traditional Chinese style, and experienced porcelain inlay techniques. The vibrant charm and ancient charm of Chaozhou have been packed into your travels. Next time, you'll find new surprises! Has this trip to Chaozhou completely changed your perception of what an ancient city tour should be? It offers the joy of shopping and dining, the depth of intangible cultural heritage, and, best of all, no detours! Save this post now! People often say that Chaoshan is just for the food, but once you're there, you realize it's also worth exploring in depth! Chaozhou Ancient City The ancient city is quite vast, reportedly occupying half of Chaozhou. You can rent a small tricycle like the one in Figure 2. It's recommended to hire an older driver, who will take you through the streets and alleys, regaling you with tales of Chaozhou's history. Each of the ancient city's memorial archways carries a unique story and meaning. Strolling through them, you'll deeply experience the city's rich historical heritage and vibrant sense of ritual. Guangji Bridge: This renowned ancient bridge spans the Han River, connecting its east and west banks. Along with Zhaozhou Bridge in Hebei, Lugou Bridge in Beijing, and Luoyang Bridge in Fujian, it's considered one of China's "Four Great Ancient Bridges." Guangji Bridge is renowned for its unique design and rich history. The bridge's center is constructed from 18 shuttle boats, forming a floating bridge that can be opened and closed. The bridge boasts a variety of pavilions and terraces (once described as "twenty-four pavilions, twenty-four different types"), earning it the title of "the world's earliest retractable bridge." At night, enjoy the Guangji Bridge light show, which begins promptly at 8:00 PM and is absolutely worth a visit! Shantou Nan'ao Island: A unique island county in Guangdong Province Qing'ao Bay: Known as the "Hawaii of the East," if you want to watch the sunrise, stay nearby! The iconic "Nature's Gate" tower serves as a landmark for the Tropic of Cancer. Every year at noon on the summer solstice, you can observe the remarkable astronomical phenomenon of "no shadow visible when a pole is erected." The Ring Island Highway (S336): The section from Changshanwei to Qian'ao Bay, especially, is surrounded by lush mountains and forests on one side and the vast expanse of blue water on the other, making it an ideal driving or cycling adventure. Be sure to visit the Sancongya Lighthouse for a memorable photo opportunity. A massive windmill perched atop the mountain, its contrasting beauty against the azure sky and sea makes this a prime spot for watching the sunset, making you feel transported to New Zealand. The aquaculture buoys, bathed in the sunlight, shimmer in a dazzling array of colors, a truly breathtaking sight. When visiting Chaoshan, remember to wear sunscreen and bring stylish clothing to fully appreciate the captivating scenery of this ancient city and island. I find Chaoshan quite different from other cities in Guangdong. The people here don't speak Cantonese, and the atmosphere is rich with life. When it comes to Chaoshan cuisine, Chaoshan beef is the most famous. Locals recommend Pan's Kee, Shaolin Beef Hotpot, and Shengji Guantang Beef—all must-try dishes.
