Mutianyu Great Wall

4.8/5
38k reviews

The Mutianyu Great Wall is nestled among the Yanshan mountain ranges in Huairou, Beijing. It is one of the best-preserved and most picturesque sections of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall, renowned as "the finest segment of the ten-thousand-li Great Wall." Its construction traces back to the Northern Qi Dynasty's wall, with General Xu Da overseeing its reconstruction on the Northern Qi ruins during the early Ming Dynasty. The Mutianyu Pass was established in 1404 (the 2nd year of the Yongle reign), and further renovations were conducted under Tan Lun and Qi Jiguang during the Longqing era. The brick-and-stone walls and watchtowers seen today are largely Ming-era structures. Along the Ming Great Wall defense line, this section connects Juyong Pass to the west and Gubeikou to the east, serving as a vital military stronghold guarding the capital since ancient times. This section of the Great Wall has distinctive architectural features: the Zhengguan platform uniquely clusters three watchtowers together, with its gate unusually positioned on the eastern side rather than centrally—a rare design in Great Wall construction. Unlike most sections fortified only on the outer side, its crenellations line both flanks, reflecting strategic considerations for dual-front defense. Between the eastern vantage point at Dajiao Tower and Zhengguan platform, watchtowers stand densely within just a few hundred meters. From Dajiao Tower's summit, the wall snakes along mountain ridges amid verdant peaks, offering panoramic views and prime photography spots—a location featured in the film If You Are the One 2. This area has over 90% forest coverage on its mountains. In spring and summer, lush greenery fills the view; in late fall, red leaves blanket the hills; and in winter, snow drapes the landscape in silver—each season offers unique scenery. You can take a cable car or ropeway uphill, then switch to an open slide through the forest for a fun and effortless descent. Compared to other open sections of the Great Wall in Beijing, this area sees fewer crowds, making it ideal for a half-day visit. Walk leisurely between watchtowers and look back from different vantage points to capture varied perspectives of the wall and surrounding mountains.

Shanhaiguan

4.5/5
7.8k reviews

Shanhaiguan, also known as the first pass under heaven, is located in the northeast of Qinhuangdao. The Shanhaiguan pass was built in the Ming dynasty, leaning against the Yanshan mountains to the north and facing the Bohai sea to the south. It is a complete defensive system and an important military fortress in ancient times. The terms "inside the pass" and "outside the pass" commonly used in ancient times were demarcated by Shanhaiguan. Shanhaiguan is one of the important passes in the eastern section of the Ming Great Wall, echoing Jiayuguan in the western section as the head and tail of the wall. It is honored as the "first pass under heaven". The perimeter of Shanhaiguan pass is approx. 4 km, connected to the Great Wall. The Ming dynasty city walls within the ancient town are well-preserved, with most main streets and alleys retaining their original appearance, making the town more elegant and quaint. The most striking feature is Zhen Dong tower on the east gate of the pass, also known as the "first pass under heaven tower". The tower stands tall on the Great Wall, commanding a panoramic view. Climbing the tower offers a bird's-eye view of Shanhaiguan and the scenery outside the pass. Surrounding Zhenyuan tower stand structures like Jingbian tower, Linlü tower, Muying tower, Weiyuan hall, the urn-shaped defense system, Dongluo city, and the Great Wall museum. The layout of these ruins offers insights into ancient Chinese city defense architecture. Afterwards, stroll into the old town to sample local snacks while experiencing Shanhaiguan's distinctive customs. Shanhaiguan is not only a military fortress with a long history, but also a picturesque tourist and summer resort with pleasant climate. The attraction features over 90 developed historical sites, with the Great Wall as the main thread, including several scenic areas such as "Laolongtou", "Meng Jiangnu temple", "Jiaoshan", "Longevity mountain", "Yansai lake", and "Wang family compound". These attractions are conveniently located close to each other with good transportation, allowing for an easy sequential visit.

Dalian Laohutan Ocean Park

4.4/5

Dalian Laohutan Ocean Park is located on the southern coast of Dalian, nestled between mountains and sea with a winding shoreline. This marine-themed park primarily showcases ocean animals and performances while offering coastal scenery. Its five venues each have highlights: the polar zone houses beluga whales, polar bears and penguins in simulated polar environments, with beluga and dolphin shows as main attractions; the happy theater features humorous sea lion and walrus performances that delight both adults and children; the marine mammal pavilion, shaped like a pirate ship, hosts playful seals and sea lions; while the coral aquarium displays colorful reef creatures and dreamlike jellyfish to recreate an underwater world. If you want to visit the bird forest to see birds, you can take the cross-sea aerial cableway to overlook the scenery of tiger beach bay and the southern coast from above, then arrive at this large semi-natural artificial birdcage. Blue peacocks, red-crowned cranes, egrets, parrots, and other birds freely engage in activities among the trees. Strolling through it feels like walking into a valley bird park, where you can occasionally come face-to-face with the birds up close. The park also features sea sightseeing boats, a 4D theater, a root carving art museum, and amusement facilities like the family-friendly Jurassic happy island. The tiger sculpture group is also a popular photo spot. When tired, you can relax on the beach, feel the sea breeze and watch seagulls circling overhead. A small reminder: animal shows at each venue have limited time slots. Check the daily schedule upon entry to plan your visit order and avoid missing desired performances.

National Maritime Museum of China

Located on the coast of the Bohai Sea in Tianjin's Binhai New Area, the National Maritime Museum of China is a comprehensive maritime museum integrating collection, exhibition, research, and education, and is known as the "Forbidden City on the sea." The white, streamlined main building stretches out along the coast, resembling a giant ship docked at the shore when viewed from afar. The sea outside the museum is vast and open, and the building itself is a photo spot worth stopping for. The museum's exhibits revolve around the theme of "oceans and humanity," with six major zones and more than a dozen exhibition halls, each with its own highlights. In the "Oceans Today" hall, a whale shark specimen over 9 m long is astonishing in scale, a giant squid plastination specimen stretches out its slender tentacles, and together with a rare pregnant shark specimen and thousands of marine life specimens, the diversity of ocean life is presented with striking visual impact; "Ancient Oceans" starts from the birth of the Earth, with trilobite and ichthyosaur fossils linking the evolutionary thread of hundreds of millions of years; "The Age of Dragons" recreates the sea, land, and air scenes of the Mesozoic era, and the ichthyosaur and pterosaur fossils and dinosaur models are especially popular with children; "Chinese Maritime Civilization" and "From Sails to Star Wheels" trace humanity's journey from ancient navigation to modern scientific research. The "Oceans and Astronomy" hall with its starry dome and the experience hall where visitors can intuitively feel the power of marine disasters are also among the museum's most popular exhibits. The museum has a very high content density, and a thorough visit takes more than half a day. It is recommended to arrange your route from the first floor upward, viewing ancient fossils first and then modern marine life, so that those interested in paleontology, marine life, and maritime history can each find what they need.

We stayed at the Universal Studios Grand Hotel again, taking a relaxed approach, not insisting on checking off all the attractions, and just resting at the hotel when we got tired, which gave us a lot of freedom. Most of the staff were easygoing and down-to-earth, especially the staff at Kung Fu Panda Land of Awesomeness, who were particularly gentle and patient with children, making for a great experience. Unfortunately, some staff at the Minions area were a bit rude and aggressive, which slightly ruined the atmosphere. Overall, the park's scenes are highly realistic, and taking your time exploring makes for a wonderful trip.

The Chengde Mountain Resort in Hebei Province is worth a full day of exploring. The resort is quite large, with shuttle buses and boat tours available, though you'll need to pay extra to choose your own routes. I really enjoy strolling around like this.

I came here because of its reputation, and the environment is indeed very nice. It's quite close to the beach and has parking. There are many European-style buildings inside, some are restaurants, some are creative shops, some are photography studios, and there are also banks, theaters, art galleries, etc. If you just want to see the scenery, a stroll around would take one or two hours, depending heavily on the weather; good sunshine makes for great photos. The creative shops are also worth browsing. It's a very relaxing place, but I didn't have time to visit anything else. Judging from the overall design, the night view should be amazing. If you want to take a small boat, just let them know in advance, otherwise the driver won't point out the camera location, and the photos won't be good.

Shanhaiguan, renowned as the "First Pass Under Heaven," exudes a profound sense of history. The majestic city gate towers are imposing, and the well-preserved city walls make a stroll through the ancient streets feel like stepping back in time. Nestled between mountains and the sea, its strategic location makes it a crucial pass on the Great Wall. Climbing the towers offers panoramic views of the ancient city and distant mountains, perfect for taking stunning photos. The scenic area also features numerous exhibition halls, providing insights into the history and culture of the Great Wall. It's an ideal destination for families with children, offering educational experiences and a chance to immerse themselves in the Great Wall's heritage. Overall, a fantastic experience and a must-see for history buffs!

If we're talking about the most famous attraction in Changli County, Qinhuangdao, Hebei Province, it has to be the Aranya Community. Originally a real estate development project intended as a community, it has now transformed into a popular tourist destination. This is because the unique atmosphere created by the cultural heritage and neighborly relations within the Aranya Community makes both residents and visitors feel comfortable. Due to the success of the Aranya project, it's now undoubtedly Changli's must-visit spot for social media check-ins, and it's definitely worth a visit.

Tiger Beach Ocean Park, nestled between mountains and the sea, is a long-established marine attraction in Dalian. The beluga whale and dolphin shows in the Polar Aquarium are spectacular, and the penguins and polar bears are adorable. The sea lion interactions in the Happy Theater are fun, and the jellyfish and fish in the Coral Aquarium are great for photos. The park has five aquariums in total, and the walking distance between them is quite long, so exploring them can be tiring. The scenery is beautiful, offering stunning views of both marine animals and the sea, making it a great place to bring children. It's recommended to check show times in advance and visit during off-peak hours for a better experience.

The National Maritime Museum can be included in a coastal tourism itinerary. Transportation is relatively convenient, with direct shuttle buses and nearby subway and train stations. The museum is a large-scale investment, and the exhibits and exhibitions are well-maintained, making it a great place for families with children to learn about science and have fun. The cultural and creative products are also quite good, and none of them can be purchased online. However, some exhibition halls require additional fees. I visited two (the special exhibition "Sunken Treasures" and the Future Ocean exhibition hall), and neither felt worthwhile. The special exhibition lacked an archaeological perspective, the copywriting felt overly AI-driven, and some slogans were unnecessarily sentimental. The Future Ocean exhibition hall is worth visiting if you're looking for photo opportunities; it's very uncrowded, allowing for plenty of shooting, but it lacks professionalism, sci-fi elements, and immersive experience.

This grassland is highly recommended. We visited in autumn, and although it wasn't as golden, it's still worth a second visit. The grassland in spring is much greener, stretching as far as the eye can see like an oasis. While the birch forests are beautiful from afar, up close they're covered in horse manure—black and polluting, making the grassland smell and the experience unpleasant for tourists, completely masking the earthy aroma. We suggest that the horse owners pick up the manure to give tourists a better impression. Overall, it's a very beautiful environment and worth visiting. Be prepared for the cold; it gets just as cold, or even colder, at night.
