What travelers say:

Almaty is the largest city in Kazakhstan, with a population of 2,039,376, accounting for about 11% of the country's total population, and its built-up areas include Targa, Bolarde, Butler (Otegen Batyr) and many other suburbs with more than 2.7 million. It was the capital of Soviet and later independent Kazakhstan from 1929 to 1997, and in 1997 the government moved the capital to Astana in the north of the country, which was about 12 hours by train. Almaty continues to be the main commercial and cultural center of Kazakhstan, as well as the most populous and international city. The city is located in the mountains of southern Kazakhstan. The climate is the best in the country.
