The generals fought in the mountains, and the great river flowed eastwards and never returned. An imperial decree in the early Ming Dynasty, during the Hongwu period, left hundreds of thousands of imperial troops from the south of the Yangtze River under the command of "General Conquering the South" Fu Youde in the wild mountains of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. They guarded the borderland, built homes, planted homesickness, and grew hope in the mountains hundreds of miles around Anshun, Guizhou.

Anshun's Dixi originated from the military Nuo of Tunbu, which is a performance used by Tunbu people for sacrifice, training and entertainment. The singing style is Yiyang Gaoqiang in Jiangxi, singing military stories of loyalty and bravery.
