About 250 fishing boats are owned and/or operated by the residents, and most locals, rather than those working on the boat, work in many of the fish canning plants that gather on the island of Dock, which, due to its somewhat isolated nature, have developed their own culture and even their own dialect. In 1942, the residents of Terminal Island were the first Japanese-Americans on the West Coast to be forcibly removed from their homes. They were forced to evacuate their homes within 48 hours and had to abandon almost all their property, including all fishing boats and fishing gear. Some were able to sell their furniture, fishing gear, boats and other items.
