Yuehaiguan Site

The former site of Guangdong Customs is a European neoclassical building in Liwan District, Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province, commonly known as the Big Bell Tower. It is an important historical site and representative building in modern times. It is located in Lianqing Community, Lingnan Street, Liwan District, Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province, China No. 29 along Jiangxi Road, on the verge of the Pearl River. The old building was demolished in 1913, and the existing building was designed by the British architect David Dick (David Dick), which was designed in the form of classical European architecture. The white ancient Roman style of the building is a typical building of European neoclassical architecture spread to China in modern times. The building sits north to south, with four floors, with a total height of 31.85 meters and a building area of 442 square meters. It has a reinforced concrete frame structure. The southeast facade is built with granite, the northwest facade is built with red brick walls, and the overall reinforced concrete structure is based on large granite. The first floor is in the form of a pedestal, which is built with Dali stone from Yunnan, which contrasts the smooth columns on the upper floor with the railings decorated with flower cakes. The front outer wall is inlaid with granite columns and strips of stone. The front and east side colonnades are all double columns, imitating Roman Ionic giant columns running through the second and third floors, and the fourth floor is a Roman Tuscan column. The corridors are paved with meticulously detailed flower-stepped brick floors and colorful tile wall skirts. The bell tower is built with a Baroque dome on top, with towers and double columns on each side, 13 meters high, and a building area of 62 square meters. Set a large four-sided mechanical clock, there are 5 hanging clocks of different sizes. It is now a branch of the China Customs Museum. Tourists can enter the venue for free with valid ID cards and other valid documents, and visit the museum exhibition rooms on the 1st to 4th floors. The roof and the bell tower above are not open.
