Palais des Rois de Majorque is located in the center of Perpignan, on the south bank of the River Tay. Built in 1309 as the Royal Palace of the Principality of Majorca, this building has also witnessed the glorious history of Perpignan and the twists and turns built to defend against enemy invasions. There are Z-shaped steps in the steep red brick city wall. Entered by the Reverence Tower, the elegant gardens and the fortified castle inside are displayed before the eyes. The palace is centred on an arcade, one of which is flanked by a Majorca window with triple fireplaces and giant Gothic arched windows. The two royal chapels next to it belong to the Southern Gothic style: pointed arches, frescoes painted in regular patterns and exquisite tile work influenced by the Moorish style. Although the marble entrance of the upper king's chapel has Gothic carved capitals, it is still a typical Hucyonian imitation of Romanesque style.
