What people are saying:

The Expo Promenade (also known as Golden Bauhinia Square) outside the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on the Wan Chai waterfront marks the most significant occasion in Hong Kong's history - the return of the former British colony to the People's Republic of China, and the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). The handover took place in the convention centre with President Jiang Zemin and other dignitaries representing China, and Prince Charles present to witness the relinquishment of what had often been described as "the richest jewel in the British Crown". The main ceremonies took place on the night of 30 June 1997. The Hong Kong SAR came into being on 1 July under its Chief Executive, Shanghai-born former shipping magnate, Tung Chee-Hwa.

Additional Information

With its vast curtain of glass and enormous aluminum roof sculpted to echo a seabird soaring in flight, the striking Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre is a major landmark on the Hong Kong Island skyline. Known worldwide as HKCEC, this waterfront expansion used top-down construction techniques to meet a challenge of limited land supply; its highly innovative methods won many industry accolades. Built along the Victoria Harbour, it is linked by covered walkways to nearby hotels and commercial buildings. HKCEC is situated on the Golden Bauhinia Square, itself a popular attraction and a great place to view Victoria Harbour and the Hong Kong skyline.
