The Temple of the Hindu Hindus of Danda Utapani is one of the most important places in Singapore. This South Indian-style temple was built in 1859 and rebuilt in 1983. It is unique in that the roof is set with 48 glass, which is just so that sunlight can shine in from all sides. On October 20, 2014, the Danda Utapani Temple was listed as the 67th National Monument in the country by the National Antiquities Authority of Singapore, the first national monument with a national insignia plaque. During the annual Dabosen Festival, believers make pilgrimages along established lines, during which they shave their heads, carry various atonement racks, and overhead milk pots, and it is common to pierce the skin, tongue or cheek with needles, in which they express their loyalty to the faith.
