The Maribanong River (Maribyrnong River) originates from the slopes of the Macedonian Mountains (Mount Macedon) and flows into Port Phillip (Port Phillip), playing a major role in the occupation and development of western Victoria. Aboriginal tribes have been operating on both sides of the river for at least 40,000 years. The Maribanong River has been a major contributor to the rapid development of the past 50 years. The river was previously known as the Saltwater River (Saltwater River), and the current name was only later widely used.
