What travelers say:

The monastery was built in November 1150 on the Tweed River at the Scottish Borders and now retains only the ruins of a very complete medieval monastery. The monastery was restored by the English army in 1322 and burned again by Richard II in 1385. But it flourished again in the 15th and early 16th centuries. It was eventually completely damaged in 1544. In the 18th century, the Ivy-covered ruins attracted David Erskine, who bought the monastery in 1780 and buried it after his death. Antique collector and novelist Sir Walter Scott and Field Marshal Earl Hag are also buried here.
