May 31, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Saint Paul
Virtual Backyard Chicken Basics - Bob Lies
Saturday, May 31, 1 pm - 3 pm
Cost: $25 per person/household
Backyard Chicken Basics is currently hosted online via Zoom and you will be emailed more information after sign up. This class satisfies requirements for permit applications in Minneapolis and some metro suburbs.
We will cover all aspects of backyard flock management in an urban setting: getting permits, choosing suitable varieties, raising chicks, coop and run requirements, feed and nutrition, common health issues, predators, cold-climate care, chickens in the garden, composting chicken waste, etc. There will be plenty of time for questions, plus an on-screen guest appearance by one of Bob's own chickens.
Taught by Egg|Plant co-owner Bob Lies. Bob and his wife Audrey have kept chickens in their St. Paul backyard for over ten years. They started their chicken adventures raising chicks for the Student Organic Farm at the University of Minnesota, and have experienced both the joys and troubles of keeping chickens in the city.

The Myth of the Straight Line | University of St. Thomas
Jun 10, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Saint Paul
We’ve been sold a story: graduate, go to college, land the dream job. But for many students (and their parents), the path forward doesn’t feel that simple—or that clear. This workshop is for families navigating that in-between space, where doubt, pressure, and possibilities all live at once.
Led by Maxine Denis, founder of
Find Telos
—and a self-proclaimed
reformed shithead kid
who had no clue what they were doing—this workshop is designed to spark real conversations and open up new ways of thinking. Through guided reflection, hands-on activities, and shared stories, we’ll explore what it means to build a meaningful life (even if it doesn’t follow the “traditional” script).
Snacks and refreshments provided.
Come to
MHC 101
ready to think, talk, question, and maybe even laugh a little. Because life isn’t a straight line—and that’s what makes it interesting.

ABOUT
GRIN AND BEARD IT
She's America's sweetheart and he's the town pariah...
Sienna Diaz is everyone's favorite "fat" funny lady. The movie studio executives can't explain it, but her films are out-grossing all the fit and trim headliners and Hollywood's most beautiful elite. The simple truth is, everyone loves plus-sized Sienna.
But she has a problem: she can't read maps and her sense of direction is almost as bad as her comedic timing is stellar. Therefore, when Sienna's latest starring role takes her to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, she finds herself continually lost while trying to navigate the back roads of Green Valley, Tennessee. Much to her consternation, Sienna's most frequent savior is a ridiculously handsome, charming, and cheeky Park Ranger by the name of Jethro Winston.
Sienna is accustomed to high levels of man-handsome, so it's not Jethro's chiseled features or his perfect physique that make her stutter. It's his southern charm. And gentlemanly manners. And habit of looking at her too long and too often. Sienna has successfully navigated the labyrinth of Hollywood heart-throbs. But can she traverse the tenuous trails of Tennessee without losing her head? Or worse, her heart?
About the authors:
PENNY REID
is the
New York Times
,
Wall Street Journal
, and
USA Today
bestselling author of the Winston Brothers and
Knitting in the Cit
y series. She used to spend her days writing federal grant proposals as a biomedical researcher, but now she writes kissing books. Penny is an obsessive knitter and manages the #OwnVoices-focused mentorship incubator/publishing imprint, Smartypants Romance. She lives in Seattle, Washington, with her husband, three kids, and dog named Hazel.
ANNIKA MARTIN
is a New York Times bestselling author working and living in Minneapolis. She loves grumpy heroes, taking pictures of her cats, running, trying to save the planet, taking long baths, and eating See's chocolate suckers. She also enjoys hanging out in coffee shops with her awesome writer husband.

Fantasy Costume Sewing Summer Camp for Teens | 755 Prior Ave N
Jun 16, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Saint Paul
In this camp, we will build the base garments for the character - that is, the clothes worn as the primary outfit. If your teen does not already know how to use a sewing machine for this camp - how to thread it, fill a bobbin, and sew a basic seam - then they should choose a simple first-time project like a cape and/or elastic-waist trousers.
Due to the individual nature of each character, and your teen's own character, the teen will need their own pattern, fabrics, and notions. The camp participant will need an adult to shop for and purchase their materials ahead of camp time. The Textile Center garage sale, ArtScraps St Paul, and thrift stores are a great place for inexpensive fabric purchases. SR Harris in Brooklyn Park or Burnsville are good too. Feel free to contact the instructor ahead of time to get a jump on this before camp starts. Cotton and cotton blends are best for beginners; silky and velvety fabrics can be difficult to sew. Stay away from anything stretchy if this is a first time project.
Teaching machines and tools are available for use during this camp. If your teen has access to their own sewing machine and/or tools, we encourage you to bring those. Participants should wear comfortable clothing that might get untidy. We will have a lunch break - please bring your own - and snack breaks daily.
Recap of what to bring the first day:
Sewing machine and pedal, if available
Sewing pattern for garment(s)
Fabric, notions, interfacing, and trims, according to pattern and character
Lunch
Clothes that might get untidy
We offer full refunds for summer camps if received 10 business days before the camp begins, less a $25 administrative fee. We are unable to offer any refund after 10 business days have passed (because we have already hired staff and purchased supplies). Your class fee may be converted into a tax-deductable donation if you desire. Please review the
Refund Policy
and the
Safety
Waiver
in the next steps.

Build the foundation. Trust the science. Formulate with confidence.
Class Description:
No more guessing. This foundational course provides an in-depth look at the chemistry behind hair color, lighteners, toners, and the hair itself. Understanding pH, alkalizers, peroxide, and dye molecules helps stylists master formulation, protect hair integrity, and improve client results.
We’ll explore how color actually works — not just in theory, but hands-on — including swatching and pH testing. Learn how to get better blondes, make smarter lightening decisions, and stop relying on hope and habit.
Knowledge is power — and healthy hair is the result.

Eliminate guesswork and take control of your formulations by learning how to calculate tone, lift, and coverage — whether going lighter, darker, or covering gray.

Sewing Stretchy Costumes Camp for Teens | 755 Prior Ave N
Jul 21, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Saint Paul
Welcome to Sewing Stretchy Costumes Camp for Teens!
Date:
July 15th - July 17th
Location:
755 Prior Ave N
Get ready to unleash your creativity and sewing skills at our camp designed especially for teens 13+! During this hands-on camp, you will learn how to sew stretchy fabrics to create your own leotard, skating dress, dance costume, etc. Our experienced instructors will guide you through the process, from choosing the right fabric to mastering sewing techniques. By the end of the camp, you'll have a one-of-a-kind costume that you can proudly show off!
We'll start with a mesh wrap skirt or a pair of practice legging-style pants made in a spandex jersey, with an elastic waistband. Then we'll build a leotard based costume, complete with mesh insets. We will be able to practice a little bit of surface design (lace, painting, stoning, etc.) but probably won't get an entire costume decorated in a few days. PATTERN AND LIMITED SELECTION OF MATERIALS ARE PROVIDED. All projects are for the participants to keep.
Your teen should know how to work a sewing machine - how to fill a bobbin, thread the machine, sew and finish seams. Sewing stretchy stuff is hard and this should not be a first project. If your teen really wants this camp but needs some preliminary instruction, consider enrolling in a Get Ready for Camp session in late May or early June.
Teaching machines and tools are available for use during this camp. If your teen has access to their own sewing machine and/or tools, we encourage you to bring those. Participants should wear comfortable clothing that might get untidy. We will have a lunch break - please bring your own - and snack breaks daily.
Meets Mon-Thurs, 9:30am - 4:00 pm.
