Join us for a talk with artist Carl Hickey (b. Dublin, 1998). For this Basic Talk Carl Hickey will be in conversation with Basic Space Co-Director Laura Harvey-Graham. Hickey graduated with a BA in Fine Art specialising in Painting from NCAD in 2022, where he received The Dean Residency Award for his graduate show. Since graduating he has gone on to have two solo shows “In-Between Stops” in Liberty Ink (2022) and “Everything and Nothing” with gallery, Atelier Now (2023). He has published a book From the Top Deck of the Bus with Driftwood Editions (2023) and has featured in multiple group shows including “In the Press” with Hypha Studios in London (2025). He completed a residency with Cill Rialaig Arts in Co. Kerry, Ireland in 2025 and is set to have his third show in The Horse Gallery in October 2025. Hickey’s work is almost a compilation of everyday situations and events – the chaotic and the organised. His work is an ode to the on-going rambles of life and he uses oil paint as his main tool to portray the city and suburbs and to convey his subjects – Dublin’s civilians and spaces – in a different context. Hickey also uses video and written work juxtaposed. Free, book or come on the day subject to availability. Basic Talks is a series of talks with leading contemporary practitioners, taking place at the Hugh Lane Gallery. Curated by Basic Space in partnership with Hugh Lane Gallery, BASIC TALKS is a platform for lectures, workshops, presentations, and performances. Speakers include artists, curators, writers, and critics who will generate discourse on producing, framing and exhibiting art. BASIC TALKS is a collaboration between Basic Space and the Hugh Lane Gallery, exploring alternatives in the dissemination of contemporary art and its discourses. Nomads on Screen: Psychoanalysing the 21st Century Subject Beyond Borders | DCU All Hallows Campus

Dublin
Arts
Literary Arts
On three Saturday afternoons – 12th April, 24th May, and 14th June – the IPFF and DCU Centre for Possibility Studies will host a special series of films, 'WItches', 'Nomadland' and 'In the Real', respectively, examining the theme of the subjectivity of the contemporary nomad through the lens of psychoanalysis. Each screening will be presented by a scholar/psychoanalyst/filmmaker, followed by a Q&A and discussion. All welcome. Presenters/scholars will include Professor Valerie Heffernan (Maynooth University), psychotherapist and scholar Dr Angie Voela and psychotherapist(UEL), scholar and film-maker Conor McCormack (CFAR, Bristol) From the Greek nemo (pasture) the term ‘nomad’ originally described pastoral people as well as groups without permanent abode. As such nomadic groups have been defined in relation to absolute or irregular mobility. The Nomad in the philosopher Gilles Deleuze’s thought is a symbol of freedom, fluidity, and non-conformity to rigid structures or territories. Rather than being defined by stable identities or fixed points (as “sedentary” people or societies often are), the nomad represents movement, multiplicity, and ‘becoming’. In our time, large groups of people still have to move themselves to flee war, famine, and torture; what we think of as the migrant diaspora of the discontents of our so-called civilisations. At the level of the singular we see and hear the accounts of those who are deemed to ‘belong’ outside/outwith the social order, what Lacan called the Symbolic. Thus evicted from the Symbolic order, the residue of their eviction leaves a trace in the Imaginary and in the Real. Information Source: The Irish Psychoanalytic Film Forum | eventbrite

Dublin
Arts
Literary Arts
Join us as at The James Joyce Centreon Satuday, June 14th at 2pm for an afternoon of poetry featuring two contemporary Irish authors from Macha Press, a new publisher dedicated to marginal, experimental and interdisciplinary works. Eilish Martin’s third collection, ! All’arme / ? And what… if not, is an experimental head-to-toe double book which can be read from either end. It investigates human frailty and the minutiae of the natural world. Crowd Work is Sam Furlong’s debut poetry collection. It explores experiences of a body’s qualities of pain, the complexities and contradictions of intimacy, and an interrogation of the performative side of identity in stand-up’s public setting. Macha Press was recently founded by seven poets, each with manifold areas of practice. All the founders are currently based on the island of Ireland but each has a visionary reach that is integral to the international and trans-generational character of Macha. The name resounds with the eponymous (and pregnant) goddess who runs through the Ulster Cycle; Scottish makar (poet); as well as the Irish and Scottish Gaelic for a geographic “plain”. The word macha has different meanings across cultures and languages that play on tropes of both fertility and power. The event will feature readings by Martin and Furlong and a Q&A. Tickets are €10. The Bloomsday Festival is organised by The James Joyce Centre in partnership with Fáilte Ireland, Olhausen's Sausages, and the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media.
